Exclamation Audi RS5 Spied Heading to Nurburgring

Audi RS5 Spied Heading to Nurburgring

After a short quiet period the Audi RS 5 has returned to the Nürburgring for more high-performance testing. These spy pictures reveal a very purposeful sports coupe with lots to show off. The small rear spoiler is integrated into the boot lid. The wide fenders and two massive oval tailpipes look just like those in the 426kW (579hp) RS 6. Big air intakes at the front signal the need of extra air. Our spies report a phenomenal sound coming from the RS 5.

General consensus is that the RS 5 will be powered by the 4.2-litre V8 in what may be its swansong thanks to fast-approaching emissions laws. It will be twin-turbocharged for extra power which should push it up to between 316kW (430hp) and 331kW (450hp). The coupe will have quattro AWD with either 6-speed manual or 7-speed Audi R Tronic.

The RS 5 was scheduled to go on sale in July 2010 but with the credit crunch seemingly taking more industry victims, Audi has been forced to postpone the market launches of a few new models. This could very well be one of them.

Note: The front and rear fenders are still covered up, and the overall shape has me thinking that the RS5 will receive boxed fenders a la the RS6.

The rear diffuser is also covered up. Maybe it'll have some (probably faux) foils instead of being a flat black piece. The tips are HUGE.

Should be interesting. I still think I prefer the S5's front end more. This looks too extreme (apparently there is a limit to how big Audi can make those flanking air inlets).

I sure hope the real deal is a lot more graceful. That rear is butt ugly. Too bad it took them so long to develop a performance version of the 5. I wonder if they'll end up trading beauty for brawn like these photos suggest.

OHHHHH I love that car, now even more with that ultra cool body kit that incorporates the rear exhaust pipes. Too bad I would have to sell me entire stable to afford it

Is it confirmed as to what is under the hood?

Reason I ask is that in this report the general opinion is it will be a 4.2v8 with turbos but else where on the Internet opinions differ greatly, anything from a v6 SC with turbo, a 4.0v8 SC to another high revving v8 based on the previous RS4 only with the extreme knob turned to 11.

If Worldcarfans are correct and it's a 4.2v8 Bi-Turbo engine then a 30hp gain over the old RS4 would be extremely small and well below what is expected from a similar size unit of this calibre. Maybe Audi are choosing this small of an increase to improve drivability and broaden it's torque while improving emissions and fuel consumption. Personally I doubt that, if it's turboed then a bare minimum of 470hp and 600Nm should be the outcome.

P.S.
I hope it's not another N/A engine, I much prefer my Audis to force the issue of performance.

In my opinion, I like the extreme front....looks kind of muscular.....!

I'm tired of speculation on the engine........I just want it to be forced inducted like everyone else including you.....!
I just want Audi to reveal what's under the hood......is that too much to ask

If this does indeed have a 4.2 liter turbocharged V8.. Oh the possibilities.

It's going to cost more than 70k, that's for sure.

My guess is that a well optioned one will land somewhere in the 80's.
