Good Business school?
Hey everyone, my nephew is looking at/applying to schools soon. He is looking to do Finance or something in the Business field. We had a little discussion during Easter on his choices, and he didnt seem too clear on what his options were.
I thought id get some help from you guys. Hes got a 1960 on the SATs, 93 GPA(in a school where honors classes arent weighted???),and good extracurriculars/community service. I doubt hes going into a top tier school with those scores like Wharton or Stanford. What are some schools with good business programs that are "likely" to accept him? |

Try UMich. You don't apply to b-school until sophomore year, but it's a good school in and of itself in case he changes his mind.

I've heard University of Arizona has a particularly good business program. Might be worth a look, with a good score like that he probably can get a big scholarship.
Trust me, choosing a school is a pita. It's more important to ask him what he wants, in-state,out of state, size, diversity, etc, etc. Tell him to buy one of those big fatty reference guides.

Does he plan on going to grad school, MBA or something? I'm not totally sure about business (I'm engineering) but I know I saved a ton of money by getting my B.S. from the in town state college, then getting my M.S. from a bigger university. He might want to consider that option.

He definitely won't be getting into any top tier schools with that unless he's got a lot of other stuff on the application (not going to judge obviously since I dont know him/her). Keep in mind that school is way more competitive than ever with everyone trying to go back to school since they can't get jobs.
I applied to state schools and didn't get into some of them with a 3.9 GPA in high school, ACT score of 30, Eagle Scout, track captain, blah blah blah. I applied mostly to state schools and was accepted at University of Kansas, University of Colorado, University of Florida and got rejected by the University of Georgia (which is actually where I am now currently). I didn't really try for Ivy Leagues or anything like that because I didn't think any of them would take me and it was going to cost too much. I don't know much about schools in the Northwest but if you can think of comparable schools to the institutions I listed then those are what I would focus on and then choose a few "out of range schools" because you never know what they are looking for. Go grab one of those college books that lists all the possible choices so he/she can get a feel for what the campus atmospheres are like and how they all rank. Furthermore depending on which field he wants to go into in business I would be careful which school he chooses. I'm a Finance major at Terry School of Business (UGA) and I know its not ranked nearly as high as their accounting program (which ranks #2 in CPA's currently) and their real estate program which is 2nd to Wharton. Hope this sorta helps. |

UMD has a good B-school. Rutgers is a bit weird because you can't apply until after your soph year and have to take a certain batch of classes to even apply. Good school, but the uncertainty kinda makes it not worth it to me.

I wasn't in it, but Penn State has pretty good business school. They have a really nice building that's only a couple years old with all the bells and whistles. Several friends and people I know landed great jobs from internships and those that cared to so far have gone on to Ivy or top non-Ivy MBA programs (admittedly, these people graduated from PSU a few years ago).
I don't know how his scores stack up at PSU, but if qualifies for in-state tuition it's worth a look. If he's out-of-state there may be more cost-effective options in his home state or elsewhere.

Depends on the school. Could help at some, might not matter at others. Have to ask.

If he can get into Standford or Wharton, another good school is Haas for UC Berkeley
