About to buy a new camera, what do you guys think if this:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-Coolpix-...0765264&sr=1-1

I want something that can get really good photos (especially sports), but I don't want an all out DSRL.

I figure nikon is probably a more serious camera, which I like, but my old camera was a panasonic, and i really likes the navigation menus.

But I want the one that will take the best pictures regardless. I wish either of them had gps though.

well, "best pictures" is a very loose term. most of the picture quality depends on the person taking pictures

if you shoot in Auto mode or using one of the presets, i guess pictures will be comparable across the entire camera class, however, my bet is still on Nikon or Canon, because of the massive amounts of money they dump into R&D, since cameras are their main business.

For that price you can pick up a really good used DSLR. Check ebay or craigslist and you might be pleasently surprised.

Article in this month's pop photo.

The Canon and Fuji look pretty interesting to me.

But if you want a p&s super zoom - the Nikon seems like a good choice (so is the Sony / Pentax also look like interesting chioces). I would wait for samples / reviews before deciding.

really ??? panasonic has better reviews than nikon ???
maybe in low end consumer line?

i don't think Panasonic has anything even close to Nikon D-series.

I found this sony:

http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cybershot...0837800&sr=8-1

It's more expensive, but seems fully loaded.

The nikon had something like fourteen 5&4 star reviews, and seven 1&2 star reviews.

The Panasonic had about 177 5&4 star reviews, and one 1 star review

Blue-coupe, unless you need a super-zoom, your best bet is Panasonic LX3. It has a truly awesome leica lens and probably the best high ISO performance among compact cameras (mainly because of the larger sensor as compared to both FZ28 and the Coolpix). See dpreview comparison here:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q408enthusiastgroup/

Surely, Nikon is a big name and it makes the best DSLRs like D3X, but in the compact cameras market Nikon's products are definitely not spectacular. I am telling you that as a big Nikon DSLR/lenses fan as I own a D90 and a bunch of Nikon lenses. My guess is that the compacts market is not Nikon's target as they make more money selling serious cameras and lenses. As an example, here is a review of the P90 superzoom and a recommendation to buy the FZ28:

http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Ni.../verdict.shtml

Surely, on paper P90 has a very impressive 24x optical zoom, but it comes at the expense of the image quality.

Here is another link for you:

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q109superzoomgroup/

FZ28 came out as a joint winner among super-zooms. Based on its attractive price (http://www.abesofmaine.com/item.do?i...K&l=PRICEGRABB) I'd say go for it. If you want a DLSR, get Nikon D40 (dirt cheap now) and you'll be happy.
