WTF does this mean?
This is a stupid subject for a thread, but I've searched and haven't found an explanation for the ever popular emoticon on this website.
WTF does mean? Here are some I came up with: I hate Microsoft Word I love Microsoft Word - why don't you use it? I'm tired of holding up this stupid icon for Microsoft Word I hate Bill Gates You sound like Bill Gates I hate George W. I love George W. You look like George W. What???? Why???? Who???? So does anyone have a good explanation? Thanks! |

However, I've worked with twenty-somethings all my computer-oriented career. I even have college-aged kids. I've been surfing the web since before Al Gore "invented" it. Never saw this emoticon on other websites. |

The particular smilie- nope. Since MS Word came about only in the '80s, but this particular version of the W icon came about probably in the mid-nineties. The MS guys on this board can be more exact. I'm not sure when email programs supported smilies, but I would assume no earlier than the mid to late nineties. Maybe they were supported earlier on the CompuServe or AOL boards. So when did "word" become vernacular? Before the internet? IMO it seems unlikely. Does anyone have an authoritative reference? Got to talk to my IT guy about installing Word 2002. |

This is probably your best definition. It's been a part of my generation's slang since I was... hell, at least 10 yrs old. I'm 25
