I got out of it the one time I was supposed to have it. Not that I tried to. I just called them and asked if I could reschedule, they said "Sure, we'll send you a new summons within the next 11 weeks." They never sent it. If they had, I would have gone.

I did this when i was 19, it was interesting...this is how it works
They gather let's say 20 people, and back then they gave you 10 bucks a day to eat, and 50 bucks also per day you serve on the trial....this is in VA, not sure if it differs from other states.. Okay so 20 people, then the lawyers from each side will select the individuals, they'll ask questions like, "Can you give an unbiased opinions about this case" You simply just say something like "i fucking hate cops and will not be able to give an unbiased opinion" The DA side will probably not choose you...but i kept my mouth shut and stayed to see how everything works. Trial lasted for 2 days, a spanish guy was prosecuted for biting a cop in the leg after they were try to drag him out of his home. Neighbor called the cops and say they heard noises and cops came to the house to check it out. He was drunk and screaming and throwing things in the house and then he bit a cop when they try to calm him down. So after all say and done the jury wanted to give him a year in jail and some probation, i was more lenient, i was not agreeing with everyone, trial could be hung forever until i decide...yes i was the only non white in the group...LOL, i then told the jury sometimes people who work a hard day likes to have a little fun when they get home and sometimes they'll drink more than they should. This man bit a cop in the leg, this is more comical to me than anything...so the law is the law, i say 6 months at the max, and he'll get out in 3 with good behavior...fair enough...that was our decision, i know after trial was over he had another hearing of the actual sentencing

Jury duty is mostly about spending some quality time with a book
I've gone several times. Been called to a courtroom a few times. Actually sat down as part of "The Twelve" 3 times. Excused by challenge (they didn't like me) once, excused for cause (had plans for Disneyland for my anniversary, told the judge I'd be back as a defendant in a divorce if I wasn't released) once, and sat a trial for 5 days once. Never got to make any dcisions, I was released on the 5 day one because they orignally said it would only last 3-4, and my employer wouldn't pay any more. |
