I wouldn't call it an airbag for your engine...basically it lifts the nose to level and provides 2x the friction against the road that brakes alone can provide. Very clever idea. If they can do this a significant fraction of a second before an accident, I'd also like to see bumpers mounted on springs and some sort of shock or energy absorber to provide another 6-12" of crumple space before the body even STARTS to deform. This would be a big safety improvement, and also would dramatically lower repair costs from "fender benders".

It was just a cheap tactic to draw attention...

Bumbers with shocks has been done before, many years ago. Unfortunately there can be severe consequences in the event of a fire.

Yeah...but not DEPLOYABLE bumpers. It doesn't have to be a normal shock, either...it could lock into and crush a permenantly deformable materiel, like a honeycomb.

What happened in fires?
