college books WTF

is it just me or are they getting more expensive? i've spent 850 bucks so far on books that I'll probably only use for 3 months then they'll be sitting in the basement. I tried to look online but most of my classes need this online homework shit that amazon doesn't come with or it'll be a extra 80 bucks...I seriously hope college is worth it although my dad is paying for it , but not for books

Wait until the first day of class to buy books. A lot of times professors will tell you to buy a different version, or a different book altogether. I had several who told us to not buy books at all. Even when they don't tell you that, you end up getting more info from notes than the books themselves.

I don't think they're a whole lot more expensive than when I went to school before the turn of the century.... But Michigan had a huge student book buy/sell day where you could get together and sell your used books to other students without getting ripped off by the book store (selling AND buying). Found out recently that some books are requiring a one-use registration key, meaning to do the homework online, you have to buy a key if you have a used book.

The rape that takes place in the textbook industry is egregious.

yeah the online work screws me over so a book at amazon is like 160+80 for the access key while at the bookstore its like 180 with the key

What made me mad about textbooks is that whenever the professor wrote the book, they would update it like every semester so they can sell more New copies. The changes would be negligible such as switching chapter orders. Rip off!

www.abebooks.com has the East Asia versions of textbooks. Most are exactly the same as the North American version in terms of content but they have some cost cutting like no colored graphics and they tend to be soft cover.

lol a year ago when i took western history the professor bought up a interesting point. He said we could buy the old book instead of the new one, like how can they come out with new books history doesn't change lol

Two other ways to save $$$ on books:

1) Buy them online. There are a few places that have the same books cheaper than your local bookstore and they will ship them within a day or two. They also have a better used book selection.

2) Buy the paperback releases. Most US students don't even know they exist but they're the same textbooks at ~half the price. They're more common overseas due to the cost and when I was in school I saw the students from overseas using these almost exclusively.

Is it an English book? If so it would be money well spent.
