My new toy (maksutov-cassegrain)

Just got it today for a huge bargain. It's a Bosma maksutov-cassegrain 105mm/1400mm. f/13.3. With 25mm eyepiece (waiting for the sky to clear to try out the 15mm and 10mm). The mount is an EM8 equatorial mount. The goto electric mounts are quite $$ and I prefer manual fun. Anyways, here are some shots:

Btw, I got them to give me a great deal on a 250mW laser too. So effing bright.

I can read the license plate of cars 5miles+ down the road at night.... what do you think? I tried pointing at some buildings and I could clearly read the No smoking sign in the stairwell. That was only with the 25mm eyepiece, imagine what I could see with the 5mm.

Because of the seeing, I can't reach the diffraction limit of the telescope. But I could clearly resolve jupiter's moons and the bands on the planet. Although I haven't tried, Saturn's rings shouldn't be an issue.

Well,

Word of advice:
  1. Refractors are too large and bulky, reflectors are much more useful.
  2. Don't get a Newtonain, it might be cheaper but you need to refocus when ever you change objects
  3. Invest in an equitorial mount, Alt-azi are hopeless for star tracking.
  4. A good mount is very important. You should spend 50% of your budget on the mount itself. Experts can spend up to 70% on the mount.
  5. Ignore the advertised magnification, it's meaningless, and you can change it by changing the eyepiece.
  6. Focus on the light collecting area of the telescope.

Good advise! Nice scope. I hope to get one someday when my budget allows for it (and I have a little more free time)
