Will I need an ultra-wide?
I'm looking at buying a used Nikon D40, I've found a few anywhere from 300-350 used, but I want to be able to produce those nice wide shots, so would 18mm be good enough, or should I fork out the cash and go for the 10-24mm lens? Opinions, suggestions please!

I'm not sure if you will "need" it but if you like to shoot everything at wide angle then go for it. I would suggest that you use the kit lens for a while and figure out what you need first. Wide angle lenses are nice but they are very specific. I'm using a 24-70 on my 5D right now and I rarely use the wide angle end (unless I'm shooting landscape pix).

your 5D is full frame, the D40 is still a crop body. its a bit bigger than the xxD canons with a 1.5x opposed to the canons 1.6x sensors. so yes if you want to shoot wide angle you will need something abit more than 18mm (which is about 27mm i think)

The sigma 10-20mm lens is a good option. Of course you can always go with the Nikon 10-24mm if you want to stick with Nikon. As I said in my previous post, make sure you know that you will be using the wide angle end a lot though. Otherwise it's a waste of money. When I was on a crop-body (XSi) I had a 10-22mm to use but rarely ever, ever used it. Even when I took it on vacation I've used it maybe once just to try things out.

I use a 10-22 all the time. It's definitely not useful as a portrait lens, but any time I'm shooting cars or landscapes, it spends a good amount of time on the camera.

which sig do you have, im really looking into the new version that stops down to an f/3.5 through the entire zoom range. i was going to pick up a tokina that drops to a constant f/2.8 but it flares too much for me.

most of the automobile/landscape photos are with the 10-20mm.

If you want to make someone look silly, get real close with a wider angle lens. This is a goofy shot with my Nikkor 17-35 on a D300. Not exactly wide at an equivalent 26mm, but it was taken with my nose about 5" from then end of the lens. God I hope my melon doesn't really look like that!
