Best Beginner / Intermediate Photo Editing Software??

Ok so i've got a Nikon D40 and an iMac....i need some advice on a good photo editing software to pic up... i fairly good with computers and i pick up on things fairly easily... i've been looking at photoshop elements and the full version of photoshop...all though i do thing the full version might be a little over kill for me...anyone have some good advice..pro's / con's???

Id pick up cs4 and watch a ton of youtube videos thats what ive been doing for the past week.

Start with elements or Lightroom. I'd start with Lightroom cause it will prove immensely useful when you graduate to CS4.

Depending on how old your mac is, definitely go Aperture or Lightroom. Aperture uses the GPU for rendering so you'd need a more modern mac for better performance. Don't waste money on Adobe Elements. Once you feel like you need something more powerful, there won't be any use for it anymore. With Aperture or Lightroom, they will always be an important part of your workflow. Photoshop is a must at some point, but if you are just starting out, you can do a lot with the first 2 apps mentioned.

lightroom 2 is pretty good i find my self using it as an all in one more and more

iPhoto gives you some basic editing functions. If you need more why not try GIMP. Its free and offers most of the tools you will get with Photoshop.

lightroom with out any question, espically if you are shooting in raw. LR2 has been aournd for a while now and the LR3 beta has been out a few months. not sure on the time line for realse, but if you are not dieing for a program, hold out till that.
