E46, E92, F32... What?

Where do the numbers come from (E60, E90, E89, etc)? What do they mean or denote?

They stand for the number of design. E46 was the 46th design. After they got to E99, they went to F01. There is more to the story, I am sure... someone else can fill in the blanks. E90 is the current 3 series sedan, E91 is the current 3 series wagon, E92 is the current 3 series coupe, E93 is the current 3 series convertible. F32 I think will be the next gen 3 series coupe.

It's just a chassis identifier that BMW uses. Many other automakers (and therefore enthusiasts) use similar codes to refer to a certain generation of a model.

Other examples include:
Honda/Acura: DC2, DC5, EG6, EK9, EP3, FG2, etc
Nissan/Infiniti: R32, R33, R34, R35 (Skyline/GT-R), V35 (G35), V36 (G37), etc
Mercedes: W204, W212, W221, etc

Though I think we commonly use our chassis identifier's much more often than other enthusiasts of other brands. (I could be wrong)

BMW names every chassis it designs, whether or not that chassis goes in to production. So even every concept or experimental chassis they create gets a designation, even if it never meets the public eye. Which explains why there are gaps in the numbers.

It just means that they got to e99 and had to go into the Fs. So since the e92, there have been 40 other chassis designs before they got to the f32.

My question is, what will be after the F's? G's?

Seems like they are running right through the F's since the new 3er will be an F3x

I agree... seems like a lot of stuff must have been scrapped or something! Oh well... doesn't matter to me as long as what makes it to production is good stuff.

They must make a lot of prototypes that never see the light of day.

Spy shots of the long lost Z3 prototype:
