When Online Games Go Too Far....

Pardon my language, but this is so fucked up. Makes me ashamed to be Korean sometimes.

http://crime.suite101.com/article.cf...arves-to-death

Police charged Kim Yoo-chul and Choi Mi-sun with child abuse and child negect after the couple spent hours a day at an Internet Cafe with their virtual daughter.

Kim Yoo-chul, 41 and Choi Mi-sun, 25, returned to their home in Suwon, a suburb of Seoul South Korea, on Sept. 24, 2009 to find their 3-month-old baby daughter dead. The couple had left the infant alone while they spent several hours in an Internet café playing the video game Prius Online. An autopsy revealed that the baby who was born prematurely was severely malnourished. She had starved to death.

The unemployed couple spent as much as 12 hours a day at an Internet café playing Prius Online. Up until two weeks before her death, the baby had been looked after Kim’s parents. Then Kim’s mother had taken ill and returned the baby to the couple. Kim’s parents had originally taken the infant in because Kim and Choi found it difficult to care for their premature baby.

When questioned by police, Kim and Choi admitted that they only fed their daughter once a day and often gave her spoiled powdered milk. They also admitted to spanking her. After their daughter’s funeral, the parents disappeared and were not found until March 2, 2010 when they were arrested by the police and charged with child abuse and child neglect. Kim told the police that he and Choi were so upset by the daughter’s death that they had not played the online game since.
Prius Online

Prius Online is a virtually reality game, much like Second Life where the players get to play out a fantasy life. They are able to find jobs and interact with other players, something that the couple could not do in real life. The game was developed in South Korea and is extremely popular in that country. The developer of the game is in the process of having the game translated and marketed in other countries.

A unique feature of Prius Online is that it contains an avatar, a young girl named Anima. All players come into contact with Anima who has lost her memory. As the players increase their skills and progress through the game, Anima is helped to regain her memory and thus able to grow and mature.

Kim and Choi spent hours a day, raising and nurturing Anima while leaving their tiny daughter alone at home where she eventually starved to death. Kwok-Dae-Kyong, a professor at Dongguk University in Seoul, told CNN that the couple appeared to have lost touch with reality, giving up raising their real life daughter to take care of a virtual one. Kwok believes that they simply couldn’t cope with being unemployed and having to take care of a premature baby.

Police who were involved in the investigation agreed saying that because they were unemployed, the couple lost the will to have a normal life.

Yeah i've read about this last week...Viets don't do this to their kids, they let Pit and Jolie adopt them instead of starving them...

Don't have time to find the study, but read somewhere that the addiction pathway for gaming is pretty much the same.

This is way worse than that older Korean man who died after playing WOW for too long. Three days straight?
