Audi S5v6 vs 335iS

S4 vs Z4sdrive53iS
0 - 100km/h in 5.0s vs 4.8s
0 - 160km/h in 11.5s vs 10.9s
0 - 200km/h in 18.6s vs 18.0s

Given that the S4 weighs 20kg more than the S5 (probable will be great when S5 gets lighter engine) and that the Z4 weighs approximately 20kg less than the 335iS will I reckon the alleration figures for both cars will be matched, leaving the battle down to handling, quality and driving appeal. I know the S5 doesn't have this engine as of yet, but it will do soon. So based on the available data from what the S4 and Z4sdrive35iS are capable of I can only imagine it will be a very difficult for the roadtesters to call a outright winner on this one.

Very nice you made this comparision. Now I can propose mine.
Audi S5 V8 (4.2l V8 FSI 354 hp) or Audi S5 V6 T (3.0l V6 TFSI 333 hp)?
BMW 335i (3.0l I6 FI 306 hp) or BMW 340i (4.0l V8 NA 306 hp)?

Even if the S5 V6 T may be better than S5 V8, I prefere the V8, for the sound, it make the car more special, in this case more special than BMW 335i, and closer to the BMW M3, also in terms of exclusivity. As for the 3 Series, I also would prefere the NA 306 hp 4.0l V8 from the BMW 540i than the FI 306 hp 3.0l I6, as is would also be more special, you have a V8 in a 'small'. Of course many think it may not do much sense as there is the BMW M3 that has a H-R NA 4.0l V8. But between the Audi S5 V6 T and the BMW 335i, the Beamer is more special as it has I6 and not V6.
Anyway, imagine a 3 Series Coupé, that does not look as special as an M3 and is not a head-turner, but has a great V8 sound, which will surely make it a head-turner: What engine has this 3 Series Coupé? Strange, but it's not an M3!

Wow, is there a 4.0v8 coming to the 3 series other than the M3? This is news to me.

The only 340 I know of that is coming is the 340d to replace the 335d, that car will have 306hp, may be that is the one you were meaning, though it's still the same 3.0 twin turbo diesel only with more power than before.

No there isn't. I just compared a theoretical possibility. I just meant I would prefere to have NA 4.0l V8 306 hp of the BMW 540i E60 (not at all the same engine as the NA 4.0l V8 420 hp by M GmbH) than the FI 3.0l I6 306 hp that is actually in the 335i. There won't be such a thing, it would be a step backwords of downsizing.

The new tranny's will play an even bigger role in acceleration numbers - more so than the hp/tq numbers.

To be fair - where was this test? or are these numbers pulled from different tests? The reason I ask, is there are several tests with the S4 doing 4.8s, 0-100kph.

I don't think there was any test involved. Footie is just stating the numbers from the manufacturers which are always a bit higher than the actual figures.

Hopefully one of these mags will test the 335iS vs. the S4 or better yet 335iS vs. the soon-to-come V6 S5 Coupe.
