Chances are smoking increased his overall risk due to mutations occurring while smoking but he probably died of lung cancer from sitting around his buddies who still smoked and inhaling the second hand smoke.

as far as I remember from high school health class, you dont just develop cancer and then die just like that. Cancer to cause death takes years and years for it to develop and grow to a size that can cause death.

That would depend on the cancer. There are cancers which can kill you very quickly.

There are definitely some rapidly spreading cancers out there. I had Burkitt's Lymphoma as a child, and it's been a while since I looked up the statistics, but I think it was something like 3 weeks before the mortality index rises above 80%; which is to say, 80% of patients who don't begin treatment within 3 weeks of the cancer's development end up dying. Although I'm sure modern treatments have improved those odds.

I urge any smokers out there to stop. Going through cancer is not a pleasant experience, I had the benefit of being young and oblivious but I can't imagine going through it again.

No bueno. Fortunately Burkitts is generally a childhood lymphoma, therefore a crap ton of research has gone into it in the past decade.

The good thing about smoking a cigar? Unless you're a maroon and inhale it, you won't have to worry about waiting 8 hours for the carbon monoxide in your blood to drop by half, it won't take 72 hours for your bronchial tubes to relax, your circulation won't take a hit, coughing, wheezing, and breathing problems will be non-existent, you won't suffer increased risk of heart attack or stroke, and you'll have the same odds as the rest of the population for lung cancer or heart attack (base on your genetic profile). You'll incur twice as much risk for mouth cancers as the general population but only 20% of the risk a regular smokeless tobacco user suffers. But you'll still be able to get the most powerful dose of nicotine available and enjoy the beauty of fine tobacco.

I know 2 people who have never smoked a cigarette in their lives and died of lung cancer. Things other than smoking cause lung cancer.

What would that be. Like a pregnant woman inhaling second hand smoke and the fetus being affected?

I kind of just skimmed the article. It said something about third-hand smoke being the residue of second-hand smoke that's trapped in hair and clothing.

I think it said that it's a danger to babies and toddlers.

I rarely smoke, but I do like a cig when I'm out with my friends on the weekend or relaxing drinking a beer in my backyard. It might take me two or three months to finish a pack. I always wonder how bad it is to be a very light smoker. I know it can't be good for me but I also know I'm not doing as much damage a pack-a-day smoker does.

Third hand smoke is that the contaminates from a cigarette linger in clothing, sofas, hair, carpets ect.. and remains after a cigarette has been extinguished. The contamination can last hours to days.
