Buying a car out of state..

Hey guys I'm from Massachusetts and I'm looking to buy a used car from this dealership in New York. I was planning to take a bus to New York to buy it and drive back to Massachusetts with it. How do I go about doing this? Should i register the car in New York then switch the plates over to Massachusetts? I'm a little confused on how this can be done

Thanks for the help fellas

You register it in the state you live in even if you live out of state.

You will probobly get temp tags from the dealership that will allow you to legally drive the car. You might still have to register it in Mass once you get there though. You will need to have proof an existing auto insurance policy (even if the new car isn't on it yet) or the dealer won't be able to legally sell you the car. Most auto insurance policys have coverage for new vehicle purchases for a predetermined, albiet very short, period of time after purchase so you are covered while driving home, etc.

Buy it...drive it home..register it ASAP in Mass.

I bought my car in Oregon, drove it home to CO and registered it that week, thats all there is to it.

It's no problem. I buy cars in North Carolina due to the lower taxes. They will send the title to the state and just head to the DMV ASAP to register it once you have all of the appropriate paper work.

I thought that you had to pay the taxes per the state and county you regestered it in?

Not if you already pay them... I'm sneaky as hell. Then you just have to pay the tag tax, which is yearly anyways.

Actually now I just have NC tags registered at my grandmothers house... because Fulton County, aka Atlanta has ridiculous tag tax. It can be 400-800 dollars a year to drive.

I checked my vehicle registration receipt and it says $18.

My drivers license is Georgia, for in state tuition...

I just tell cops I'm in the military and I just moved here.

Got it.

I did that for 4 years when I lived in NY.

Still had my Illinois license/insurance because it was cheaper. I was broke as f**k back then, so whatever.
