I'll skip most of the story so that I don't rob Jalopnik of the hits it's earned with this. The short version... John Dillinger wrote Henry Ford a letter thanking him for making such a great getaway car:

Dear Mr. Ford -
I want to thank you for buidling the Ford V8 as fast and as sturdy a car as you did, otherwise I would not have gotten away from the coppers in that Wisconsin, Minnesota case.
