SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - A former NASCAR driver who pleaded guilty to leading deputies on a chase in his Corvette that reached speeds of 140 mph (225 kph) has been sentenced to a month in jail and probation.

James Neal pleaded guilty Tuesday to felony evasion while driving recklessly.

Orange County sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says deputies tried to pull over the 56-year-old at 3 a.m. Monday in San Clemente for a minor infraction, but he took off.

Amormino says Neal was arrested on Interstate 5 in San Diego County after his engine blew up.

NASCAR says Neal was a NASCAR track racer at the old Ascot Park track in Gardena in the early 1980s. He never won a national race.

They used to say you might be able to outrun the deputy, but you can't outrun Motorola. Stupid move. First, trying to outrun the law. Second, doing it in a Chebby.

Cheers.

Clearly, the problem is that he never won a race.

If it was a Toyota, he'd have an excuse....

I can't believe he would try to run from the cops, especially in SoCal. They've got that shit down to a science.

Never understood people who ran from the cops. Unless you got everything figured out and your route planned, there is little chance you are getting away.

Pretty much. If you're not CERTAIN you can lose them for good in the first 1-2 minutes, just pull over and be cool.

WTF does his never winning a national race have to do with the story though...?

This is why I love the Ghost Rider videos. Dude runs from the cops and actually gets away. Consistently.
