Why can't I PM?

Just a nube so I am probably missing something, so please bash me too hard. How do I PM another user. I found the link through their iTrader, but when I click on the PM link it tells me;

"you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation."

I put on a flak jacket just in case this one gets rough, thanks for the help

I had the same question - I want to PM a user about a post so joined the site and now I'm getting the same message. A bit stupid really - are they not just encouraging us to write any old rubbish anywhere just so we can PM who we want to?!
