What Car is More Iconic Mustang or 3-Series?

Ever notice that the new Mustang does not have a Ford badge on it anywhere? But everyone knows which car manufacturer builds the Mustang. I wonder if our beloved 3-Series was de-Roundel'd would people recognize it as a BMW?

Dumbest question for 2010 so far! The mustang is THE American icon in the automotive industry.

In the US the Mustang takes it without a doubt. I'm sure it's different elsewhere though.

God how I want a 5.0.

I agree
Since 1964 when Ford started the Pony Phenom the Mustang has been an American Icon. I think the only car that comes close is Americas Sports Car, Both of them are Corvette. Red, White and Blue Iconic Vehicles.

No one really cares for both the Mustang and the Corvette outside America.

...also, interestingly enough, both with their own badging.

More unappreciated than uncared for I think. They aren't Euro-friendly cars at all.

But most people around the world recognize both cars as iconic American symbols.

I nominate the 911 as the most iconic car line ever for the following reasons:
-instantly recognizable as a 911; you can see the original DNA in the whole product line.
-distinctive, looks like nothing else
-successful, inspired copies etc.
-represents a specific idea/ethos/mindset [going fast very well]
-longevity of the product line over many decades
-very well made - the cars last.
-inspired huge WORLDWIDE fan base
-actually achieved all the above goals

Outside of North America, neither the vette or the Rustang has earned a big fan base because of the dealer price markups, no dealer service network, the high cost of fuel, and most importantly the fact that the local competition was so much better.

Only a handful of sports-cars are hugely popular the world over, and the most iconic of these is IMHO the 911 and its progeny.

Well I would also say that a big reason they have such a bad rap overseas is perception based on stereotype... Like... I dunno... The fact that they get bad gas mileage? The Vettes and Mustangs (to include the GT500) get better mileage than the M3. True story. Also, define "significantly inferior". As in track times? Reliability? Interior quality? BMW hardly rules all fronts there, especially if we're talking about the 3er.

But I agree with you on the 911. IMO definitely by far the most iconic car worldwide.

People recognize my car no matter where I am. Old people, young people, little kids. Even if they're clueless about cars, they all seem to know that it's a Porsche. And unlike most cars, it's a car you don't ever have to drive fast just to try to get noticed.

I think the reason the 911 is so recognizable is because the basic design hasn't changed a great deal over it's entire lifespan. Most other cars get MAJOR overhauls and gain or lose fans in the process as well as become less recognizable. 911s don't have this drawback.
