HELP....Land Rover Owners!
I'm looking at used Land Rovers from 15 to 20k in value. Looks like i could get a 05, 06 LR3 in that range...or an 03,04 Range Rover with mileage around 70 to 80k. Mileage is lower on the LR3.
My question is...what are these like with regard to repairs and maintenance? Costly? Relatively reliable? I'm looking to replace my toyota FJ Cruiser which was recently totaled. That thing never saw a shop other than an oil change over 3 plus years of ownership. Bulletproof motor! I want something similar but with more luxury. Can anyone chime in? thanks

Try LandRoverforum.com.
I had an '06 RRSS and had a lot of problems with it. Mostly electrical. Not too happy with it and sold it after 10 months of ownership. Not sure about other LR models and some earlier models of the RR tho. |

My dad actually gave back our LR FL to the dealership 2 months before the lease was up. Thats how bad he was tired of it.
But God the look great. They really need to get some reliability going. |

I know they break down alot... but isn't it land rover that's always touting that something like 95% of the ones that have been sold are still on the road?
Of course the spin doctors could have worked that statement over with some fine print at the bottom of the add that said something like "Statement based on MY09 results". General consensus is that they aren't very reliable... especially anything before 2005-2006 (not sure why on these dates, but I've heard this). The people that I know who own them... friggin love them. But ALWAYS tell me that they aren't for 1 car familys because they are always in the shop. *edit* And the Freelander was junk from the beginning... but I have heard this from A LOT of Freelander owners. |

Our 00 Disco Series 2 is still going strong at a lil over 100K mileage.
If you are looking at cars in the 70K+ mile range, here are some tips: 1. Ask when the coil packs/plug wires and plugs were changed. Its a BITCH to DIY since the coil packs are behind and I mean BEHIND the intake mainfold. It's really behind and underneath the IM and firewall, a pain to get to and I have thick forearms, no way I could do the coil packs myself unless I removed the IM. You will know it hasn't been done if the car idles rough, hesitates, etc. Relatively inexpensive fix. I've had no major problems with our 00 other than the "three amigos" lights. HDC, TC and ABS lights on. I just live with it. I forget what I need to replace, but the part costs like $900 OEM but you can get it from 250-300 from a good contact. My only other gripe about the car is that the keyfobs are CRAP, the rubber buttons broke on them and the fobs are around $80 on ebay but ONLY the dealer can reprogram them. I updated the HU in mine with an Alpine CDA-9833 since I wanted ipod connectivity into the factory amp. I had to use a low input regulator from the speaker line outs to the factory speaker line ins.

Big +1. I have no idea why people still buy those things. There are MUCH better SUVs out there, for a much better price, with much better reliability. Do yourself a favor and get another FJ. There's a reason why used LR's are dirt cheap.

I used to own a LR. Sold mine about 2 years ago. From my personal experience and the experience of several friends, LR's are expensive to maintain and are not entirely reliable. I'd only suggest it to people who have some mechanic experience. It is a nice ride though. With lot's of space. Great for mudding.

I can only speak of reliability issues of vehicles bought in UK and inparticular mine. My 08 RRsport, has been in for three bits of warranty work since I've bought it. Electrical and suspension faults have been the bain of my life, however my dealer has always been helpful and understanding.
As for Discos, I'm told they are lot more reliable than FFRR or RRS. Issues are similar throughout the range I'm led to believe but most of these faults are pretty much addressed within the first years of ownership. If I was to buy another one, I'd go on the forums and check for all the TSB (Technical Service Bulletins) for that particular model and cross check to see the model you're enquring about has had the appropriate work carried out. Good luck and don't be put off by buying one.

Coming from a former Land Rover service advisor, they are SUPER expensive to maintain and always need something. The "average" Joe doesn't need to own one if his expectations are to be able to hit the key and have it start, run, drive, and function properly consistently. If you have money to spare, and another car to drive, it could be the right one for you. Personally, I love them. There is an allure to them, but I can't justity the cost. I'll stick to my BMW.
