Help with lenses

Hi Guys,

New to photography....well, relatively...I do need some opinions on where to buy lenses for a canon T1I digital rebel. (online) - best prices etc...

What do you guys recommend in terms of where to start with lenses (meaning which should I get first)...I have an 18-55 right now.

Looking to take dramatic car photos, some of my buddies weddings (for fun), and nice photos of my girl and I.

Best prices from reliable vendors will probably be from major stores like Adorama, B&H, BuyDig and Canoga Camera. Avoid the scam stores (generally based in Brooklyn). Even better deals can be obtained used if you hunt around your local Craigslist. The larger "premium" online gear trading sites like FredMiranda or photography-on-the.net will have good selections, but usually ask prices so close to new that you might as well buy new and get the warrantee.

What lenses to choose will be something that will depend on how you shoot. Generally folks like to start off with some higher quality zooms. On Canon crop bodies I'd recommend 10-22 if you like ultrawide and maybe the 55-250IS if you want to increase your telephoto range. For portraiture/weddings you may want to consider a fast prime lens like the very inexpensive but pretty decent 50/1.8 or the more expensive, but more highly regarded 85/1.8.

These are just starting points. Everybody's shooting styles and gear needs are different. Part of the fun is experimenting and figuring out what works best for you.

Thank you for mentioning us as "reliable." It's very gratifying. To JohnnyM57: You may want to bookmark ResellerRatings - a very reliable site for this sort of research.

Budget obviously needs to be considered first.

With zooms:
Landscape = 10-22mm would be a must for me.
Weddings = You need a good flash.
Photos of you and your girl = I'd invest in a nice prime like the first reply suggested. I would opt to spend a bit more money in the 50mm 1.4 lens though. For a crop body, I personally like the 35 1.4 from Sigma.
