iPhone temperature warning!

I left my phone in the car the other day and when I got back in, my phone had a screen that said the phone was too hot and needed to cool down before it would operate. Anyone else ever experience this? It was fine after I put it in front of the AC vent for a few minutes. I wonder what too hot to operate actually means...

It means that... the phone is too hot. Electronics can only operate within a certain temp range before they are prone to being damaged. It's just a built in safety measure

Well duh...

I just wonder what specific components are afflicted. And frankly, I was surprised that Apple built that warning into the phone.

I dunno which components are affected, but I'm sure that it's there to help protect all of the solder joints and such, along with the actual processor itself. I do know that LCD screens can be ruined over time from too much heat. If you've ever seen old LCD projectors with a weird blue blob on them when they project, it's because of the heat from running over time.

Bro, I had the same message come up after I had left the phone in car with temp about upper 90s outside. When I returned to the car, I could not even hold the phone, it was burning hot and it had this message come up like you said. But after about 10 mins or so, it came back to normal and no problems whatsoever after that (except for the that proximity sensor ending my calls or opening up the mail app which annoys the hell out of me) .

I have gotten that message only one time before after accidentaly leaving my phone in direct sunlight for an entire rugby match.

My wife left her 3g in the open window one morning, and we slept in to about 11:00, and it popped up with that warning, then the screen went solid white for about a minute, then it stopped working all together. The Apple Store replaced it, no questions asked. So you can apparently get it hot enough that the LCD screen stops functioning.
