Exclamation BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics (VED) coming with BMW Concept Active 5 Drivetrain

As reported on BIMMERPOST HOMEPAGE.

Name: VED_GL.jpg
Views: 15154
Size: 110.7 KB

At a glance:
  • VED green-lighted for production
  • Start of production in 2013 at Lepzig
  • First available with a regular combustion engine (drivetrain from BMW Concept Active 5 - per Scott26)
    • The drive system featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid consists of a straight-six gasoline engine with TwinPower Turbo technology, eight-speed automatic transmission, and electric drive. Integration of BMW ActiveHybrid technology in a sedan already extremely efficient with its “conventional” combustion engine reduces both fuel consumption and emissions once again by more than 10 per cent. At the same time the electric motor offers a boost function, supporting the gasoline engine in generating particularly dynamic drive power for an even more sporting driving experience in the car.
    • The drivetrain technology featured in the BMW Concept 5 Series ActiveHybrid allows all-electric, zero-emission motoring in city traffic. At the same time a special hybrid-based Auto Start Stop function offers additional efficiency by consistently switching off the combustion engine when stopping at the traffic lights, a road junction, or in congested traffic.
  • Full Hybrid (1.5l inline 3 diesel + e-motors) to follow later
  • 4-seat configuration (per Scott26)
  • Will maintain shape from concept car (per Scott26)

Big News: German AMS reports (confirmed by BMW insider Scott26) that BMW's board of directors has decided to green-light the Vision Efficient Dynamics for production at the Leipzig plant. According to this report, the VED is scheduled to hit the market in 2013 using a regular combustion engine. The drivetrain concept shown at last year's unveiling of the VED (1.5l Diesel engine + two e-motors) is said to follow later. In other news, this report also mentions that the Leipzig plant is said to produce the new entry level BMW car.

Best regards,
south

Regular combustion engine disappointing. This car is supposed to be a tecnological tour de force with an emphasis on green performance. I think it should be offered with the plug in powertrain only. The regular combustion engine dilutes the model IMHO. Anyway I'm very excited to see this car has a production future.

Id agree completely. I am sure they will keep "Ultra efficiency" in mind with the regular combustion engine...

I would love to see an answer to the Audi R8 in the form of an M version of this.

Me too. I just got a sales job at my local dealership

Well. Obviously its not going to look EXACTLY like that due to certain regulations so I'm hoping it doesn't become a watered down, boring design. I think that regular internal combustion engine is going to come in the form of whatever is in the 1/3 series.

This is fantastic news. I really hope the production version does not get watered down TOO much.

Rad, but I'm sure it will be priced way out of my league... guessing $80K - $120K...

I think the combustion engine is exciting, did not see that coming. Awesome. Now they MUST make it an R8 killer. (sorry Scott)

Exciting stuff indeed, will be interesting to see where this car slots in within the current BMW lineup. Will also be interesting to see what petrol engines are available upon launch.

My guess is that because of the fact that even the concept of this vehicle is new they would probably offer it with one engine to test the waters.

The styling of the vehicle seems perfect to make into a supercar.

Scott said that the S65 will die with the current M3.
Does that mean that the naturally aspirated engine we will see in this car will be the reincarnation of the S85 v10?
I hope so... although that would never, ever, happen.

I'm expecting the engine to be a lot smaller than that.

Expecting, but not hoping.

It's too soon to bring out a car like that. The world is not ready. There are too many pot holes and more middle class are on the edge of poverty for a $80,000 car.

Expect some overlap of technology with the lightweight Z2. Either the turbo 4cyl 275 bhp or the M3 6cyl turbo monster would provide outstanding performance.
