Buying a new 60" HDTV - LED or Plasma?
So my dad is in the market for a new TV for our basement and he basically told me to find something in the $1500-$2000 range that will look nicely mounted on the wall. It has to be 60" or bigger.
The two models I have my eyes on are; Samsung UN60C6300 60" LED ~ $2,079.00 Panasonic TC-P65S2 65" Plasma ~ $1,749.00 We have a Panasonic 42" Plasma in our den area and the picture is amazing, especially on Blu-Ray. I love how vibrant and clear the display is on Plasma but the only drawback is how big and heavy they are compared to LED/LCD. I was never a fan of LED/LCD but the fact that most of the newer models are super thin and the display on LED is very crisp and vivid convinced me to look into them a little more. I know both have their pro's and con's so maybe someone on here has first hand experience with TV's in this size range. |

Depends...if it's light controlled room, LED sets right now don't match the blacks of a plasma, but they're "brighter." I'd go w/a plasma, but read up on the S2 and check to see if the rising black issue has been resolved in newer sets. If buying online, get in on the Panny EPP (employee purchase prog) deals which are generally better than most online deals. You can sign up by googling/slickdeals.

I have both the Panasonic TC-P42S2 (which is the 42" model of that exact plasma) and a 55" Sony XBR8 LED LCD.
Blu-rays look amazing on both (slight edge to the Sony LED), but I prefer video games on the plasma. Black levels are MUCH better on the Sony (local dimming RGB backlights that can shut off entirely) and the plasma is brighter, but not by much. You can PM me if you have any specific questions. |

LED for sure. Plasma is old school. Do any manufacturers still make plasma tv's?
The days of having a 100lb plasma that is 6" thick are over. I just got a Samsung 55 LED that is 1" thick and weighs less than 50lbs. The black levels are great. Anyone who argues otherwise either hasn't seen the new led tv's or would think their plasma is the best no matter what they see. |

Pioneer Kuro (Elite if possible), try to find one somewhere. It's a plasma, and even till today, every new TV is still graded against it. Some manufacturers have come close (Panasonic especially, but that's most likely because they bought Pioneers patents after Pioneer got out of TV's), but none are there yet.

Plasma = better blacks and less motion artifacts.
Bought our current 50" Pioneer Kuro Elite last year at Best Buy when Pioneer announced that it was getting out of the plasma business. BB marked it down to $1,800 (normally $3,500). Even though we already owned a 50" Fujitsu plasma that was a few years old (no slouch itself), I convinced the wife that this was a deal that was too good to pass up. ![]() |

I found out about the sale on the last day of the sale, through AVSForum.com. Was just randomly browsing (like I do here) ...
Edit: BTW, everytime I go to BB, I still go to the Magnolia section to see if they had any Elites still on sale. Usually they are at full price, but I do remember once or twice they had the sale. I guess they still have some in inventory? If I see it again, I'll post something up on OT. May be store specific though ... |

wtf
Plasma is the panel that generates color AND light LED is the back-light that's pure white. You're comparing apples to oranges. In terms of color VIVIDNESS, yes the plasma wins, since it actually GENERATES light. LED-backlit TV still use an LCD panel.... the LED shines pure white light through LCD panel that gives it color On a smaller TV, plasma sucks because plasma pixels are bigger, and thus you achieve a lower resolution. On big panels it really doesn't matter. All that matters is the ASIC behind the TV that does the signal processing. Different companies feature different pull-up technologies. As far as picture quality goes, Sony XBRs have been the industry tops for years. Please don't listen to the saleman's bullshit.
