Bought a Lizard Today

Just brought the little guy home (At least I think it's a male). It's a Green Anole and he's adorable. I think I'm going to name him Steve McQueen, (Because he's awesome) and if you've ever seen that episode of House M.D.

Any advice on Anole care? I don't want to feed him crickets, the lady at petsmart said he'll eat still food but the internet says to give him crickets. Any herpetologists out there?

I don't know, what's the point of owning any pet? It's a pet, I think they look cool. It was only like 7 bucks, so it's not really like it's common. I wanted something that was easy to take care of.

I had one of those when I was younger and someone picked up the cage and the rock that was in the cage slid and crushed him against one of the walls

$7? Oh then what the hell, even if it's just for the lulz.

See if you can teach him tricks.

It's the cage and shit that adds up. But that stuff can be reused, so it was worth it. They're actually pretty cool critters, better than fish.

Also, Doug I love your cat-in-the-tube sig. It makes me smile.

First off I wouldn't trust anything the people at petsmart/petco say about exotic pets... when I got my tree frog the person told me it was a reptile... uhhh yeah...

I would make sure you have the correct temperatures and lighting (not sure about anole's but certain reptiles/amphibians require specific UVA and/or UVB light to fight off a condition of weakening bone structures due to lack of calcium IIRC called metabolic bone disease).

Why don't you want to feed them crickets? Its enjoyable to watch them eat live food IMO. Also be sure to look up any vitamins that will be lacking from being captive, you will probably want to coat the food with a calcium supplement. I would just read up on the internet, you should be able to figure out in general what's necessary and go from there.

one last thing you should cover up 3 sides of the cage with something (preferably matching their habitat), I use cardboard spray painted a dark green for my white's tree frog's cage to simulate a rain forest environment... this will help them from feeling so exposed.

Thanks, I totally forgot about the backdrop, I'll do that next. I already bought a UV light, but I need to go get a nighttime one, but it's only like 3 bucks. That's what I was thinking about crickets too, my reservation was that it's just a hassle. Hopefully it'll eat live crickets and dry anole food too, we'll see. I'm excited, this is my first pet after by beta fish I had as a kid. My parents never let me get a dog and my apartment is too small now (Plus I'm really allergic to cats )

^I had a bunch of these one I was a kid, they love crickets. Also, when they're green = agitated/nervous and brown = relaxed (or at least that's what they told me). Also, their tails can fall off if you grab they while they are in distress (aka running away from you outside the tank), it definitely happened to me and freaked me out.

I've had some geckos in the past. For me at least they generally wouldn't eat stuff unless it was moving. Go with crickets. Order them online and keep them in a little $5 hermit crab cage and just dump them into a little chinese food container and shake them in calcium supplement. Then into the cage.

I don't know anything about Anoles but I know feeding crickets really isn't that bad. The hard part is keeping the crickets alive!

Here is a picture of my Miss Jingles, she is a Tangerine Het Albino Leopard Gecko. I think she is adorable.

How does it react to you? I'm curious of their intelligence level.

I've always wanted to get a Bearded Dragon. I met a guy on the beach a few years ago who had one, and it was trained. He would call its name and it would come walking over to him. No leash or anything, just chillin on the blanket on the beach with him.

Heres a pic of one:
