Cheapest car to lease?

My girl needs to get a car relatively soon

She has about $2k saved up, more or less, that she can use without disturbing her 6-month back up month (you know, making sure you have enough to live off of for 6 months if you suddenly get 0 income)

I was thinking of her buying a car in the mid 1000s, with $500 left over for future repairs

But I was thinking why not lease a new car?

She has an avg of $500-600 net income per month, with expenses (being food and gas mostly) of about $100-150/month, sometimes $200

The chance of her losing her job is slim, but it is obviously a possibility.

So, instead of buying a car for $1500 and saving $500 for repairs, I was thinking maybe she should lease a new car

I remember seeing ads on TV for $100-150/month leases?

Never paid much attention to them though

$150/month for 3 years with say $500 drive off? (not sure) IMHO is better than $1500 gone, with possibility of expensive repairs/car not working/leaving her stranded/etc

This way she doesn't have to worry about a CEL, shaking car, etc (that's what her current ford does, and her dad won't change it and still use the car to make her do what he wants, hence why she wants to get something and be independent in that regard)

I am looking around myself, but any help and/or experience/knowledge is much appreciated!

Well, she's my girl, but she's not my girlfriend

Plus... why would you ever buy your girlfriend a car? I'll help her look for one (obviously) and talk to the dealer, but I won't spend a penny nor will I co-sign.
I would do it for my wife, but even that not unless I've been married for a while (though this is speculation as I have no idea when I'll get married)

What, just cause I have a 80k I should get her a car too?

So what, did you buy your girl her car?

Same for the Honda Fit.
But I don't know what the fees and whatnot will be

I think a Fit is better for her, even though it has a lower MSRP with the same payment. Going to the dealer today.
Yaris, I did a quote online and it was 196/month for a 14k car

Sentra for 99?
I just looked into it, and offer is 139/month with 2k OTD

if they do 139/month 500 OTD, or something similar, that would be great...

If we can get 190/month with under 1k OTD, she'll prly do it.

Big difference between my girl and my girlfriend

But that's a matter for a different discussion and has nothing to with cars/this thread.

How much leg room is there with Toyota/Nissan/Honda dealers?

I've only dealt with BMW/Merc/Porsche dealers in the past and with these cars, you can usually bring it down a hefty amount

That would be heartbreaking

But I'm assuming she would leave a finger print or two, and I would more than happily sue her for something like that, or at least get her insurance

Looked on Toyota.com and nothing special for a Corolla on leases

I know we got my grandma's camry for $220/month tax included $900 OTD....

but the 220 is the problem.

RE: the MINI.

Although the "down" is more than you say she has, consider..

The 1st payment is in there as well as her refundable security deposit. It is 10K miles a year so make note of that.

She would get 30mpg as well as Free Maint. Also that deal is on an auto. If she drives stick/better in a MINi anyway, that knocks off about 1200 from MSRP I think.

When you put a pencil and paper to it, it still makes fiscal sense.

Yes the mini is great for the value

But she is coming from an old Ford Taurus that rattles, shakes, has a CEL, sucks on gas, dent in the door....
so pretty much anything she gets will be a great improvement

MPG is important.
Style not so much

I will try and see what I can do with the Mini as I have a good relationship with the dealer through our BMWs
She cannot drive manual unfortunately :/

10kmi per year is more than enough; if the lease would permit it, I would see if they could approve 7500 mi per year, as that's what we did with my grandpa's Mercedes

the Free maint is a plus, but I saw that Toyota has that too right?

Thanks for the input

I'll be looking at the Kia and Hyundai next

"Excludes taxes, title and fees."

How much do you guys think that would run on a Mazda 3?
Or a Honda Fit?

On my M3, DMV/Dealer fees were $1200 (give or take), so I assume the fees for a Mazda 3 or Fit to be $500?

Or am I misunderstanding something?

The Mazda 3 offer is 200/month 0 due at signing except Excludes taxes, title and fees, but to top it off, first month is covered.
but it's a 42 month lease.. which usually sucks cause you're forced to pay one more year's worth of DMV registration at the end of 36months

When I met my wife, I wasn't in the best financial situation. I had crushing loans, and my yearly income was around $40,000 a year. We took the bus, or subway everywhere.

If I was in a position back then to comfortably afford an new M3 and a new Z4, would I have financially helped her get a car? Definitely. I loved her the first time I saw her, enough to not put her into a $1,500 death trap.
