Keep Desktop and get new iPad 2 OR Sell Desktop and get a new laptop
Fellas,
Here's the deal. I currently have a 4 year old desktop from HP. Windows Vista. At the time it was in the top range in horsepower. Of course now, it's not even close. Also I have a high end Logitech sound system with woofer, wireless mouse, 21" flat panel, printer/scanner/fax, etc. I have seen PC's with my setup go from 250 - 300+ online. It can be a pain walking into my bedroom to use the PC without watching TV. So for convenience, I want something for the living room. I'm curious to know what setups you guys have and what you recommend. Do you think it's more feasible to keep my setup and get the new iPad 2 for $500 OR sell the desktop and get a laptop for $800 with some serious horsepower. FYI. 95% of my PC use is web surfing / e-mails. I don't even bother with gaming. On occasion I will need to use Word or Excel. Even though my PC is turning into a dinosaur, it still does the job. But then again I thought the same about my Blackberry Storm. Now I have the iPhone, and it's not even close. If I lose it, I will pay the $500+ for a replacement before I turn the Blackberry back on. |

Make more money. Save money. Keep original computer and buy Ipad2. Oh and 5 lashings for owning a Blackberry Storm.

If 95% of your PC use is web surfing/emails, then get an iPad 2 only if you like the Apple iOS experience. If not, then get a laptop with Windows on it. You don't need serious horsepower to web surf or check email (unless you frequent tons of flash-based pr0n sites). You can easily use iWork on the iPad 2 for the occasional Word/Excel stuff, imo.

desktop + iPad 2, unless you are a student who needs a computer to take to class, if not an iPad 2 will be a much better replacement
I was just actually on the same boat, my old MBP is 4 years old and beginning to show its age, so I was gonna buy the latest MBP but instead I bought an iPad 2 and will buy the next gen iMac when it comes out so far, I barely use my old laptop, only thing I use it for is to download movies and watch them on my TV, so an iMac would be an even better solution |

But then again, in 3-5 years from now I'm still going to have a desktop with Windows Vista. Is that so bad? If I can only get $250 for it now, is it going to make THAT much of a difference in a few years getting $150 for it? Last edited by comebackid; 04-12-2011 at 12:42 PM.. Reason: ? |

Or have 1 laptop for everything.
I can bring it into my room and I can hook it up to the charger and 23" LCD monitor, Altec Lansing speakers. I've got BT keyboard and mouse. Network printer. None of which even require hooking up. Bring it into the living room and stream movies to the PS3, big screen, and home theater speakers without hooking anything up. Bring it to class or bring it out with me and and do as I please with it. I dont see a point in the ipad and dont need a desktop. |

I should probably just sell the desktop and get what I can for it. Vista alone is enough to pull the trigger. It is awful.
Macbook is a good suggestion. Although my buddy at work says I can get a killer HP laptop for 600-800. The consensus I am getting is desktop + iPad2 = laptop. Might as well just have one piece. Less is more. Thanks for the input... Last edited by comebackid; 04-12-2011 at 01:21 PM.. Reason: add |

Don't get the ipad2. If you are feeling the old age with the desktop, think about it with the ipad. The first one came out last year, now there is already a new one. I bet you anything, a new one will come out next year, and the year after, and the year after. Each one will have something the other doesnt and you WILL want it. So you will shell out whatever they ask because you will love your ipad. I would just build a new desktop and have wireless keyboard and mouse and have my Flat Screen tv as your monitor. Then you will have a huge monitor for all your websurfing and other things....like your movies.....or porn.

I'm with JK
At home, my laptop sits on a shelf, from which it's connected to KB/mouse/speakers/monitor, so it has desktop status. If I need to bring it around the house for some reason, just unplug and go. And of course when I need to bring it with me somewhere or need to travel, it's a laptop. Battery life suffers, but they're not too expensive so I've got a dedicated second battery which is perfect.. Also convenient to have everything on one system (program/files-not having to share between computers) since you are using the one. imo the Ipad is a luxury. To me, it's worth very little since I don't see myself using it consistently, but I can see how to others it would be worth maybe $150-250. I wouldn't spend Apple's asking price, but again, I've got almost no use for it so my judgement may be strained. |
