Home Electronics A/V Help
I am buying a condo that is already wired, and it has some equipment already in place. Everything built into the walls are staying (17 speakers + 3 subs currently) but the equipment in the closet is optional.
Can anyone help me identify what the equipment is? Would it be worth keeping any of it? And if so, what price would be fair? Thanks

just google Integra and the model number on the bottom right DTR-xx. I wouldn't pay more than half the original price for it if it's still the current model.
Also, HD DVD is pretty much useless now. So definitely stay clear of that DVD player. |

Integra makes nice stuff. The HDDVD player is useless (I have one).

Wires in the back look like a work of someone with no arms and no eyes. Get rid of all that garbage and start over. It will be beneficial for you in the long run.

Like everyone else said, HDDVD is a dead format. Got killed off by BluRay. So get rid of that HDDVD player.
Integra is a high quality audio brand. So it might be worthwhile to keep that if it is sold at a decent price. If you do plan to get rid of the equipment though, you might want to keep the pre-wired infrared system so you can replace with you own equipment and control it from your theater area. |

17 speakers in the wall? 3 subs built into the wall? A condo...is it attached to other units????? WTF that receiver can't power 17 speakers, maybe it has them zoned out. I dunno what is going on with this set up.

Well, it does have a switch or two... so 17 speakers is entirely possible.
The HDDVD player is useless... the receiver is meh, but prolly worth keeping if you don't intend to buy a new one.

A/V is something that is very personal.
I would do this if I were you. 1. Don't take any equipments on the closet but take all the speakers and subs. 2. Make sure to ask them how things were wired before (zones) 3. Do some study on general A/V layout. 4. Get a decent to good AVR with lot of room to play with since you have zones to break out. 5. Hear em out for couple weeks. 6. Change out the speakers for your taste as you go. You will need to do quite bit of research before purchase any new equipments! |

I would probably still start fresh, but if you don't want to spend the money on that stuff right now it is easy to swap that kind of stuff out at any time. |

Thanks for the info guys, I should be getting the exact model number on the receiver today. I know the condo is fully wired and has some cutouts in the drywall for touchscreen controls which I do want to get installed.

It all depends...
Do you plan on spending $$ on new stuff? If you dont take the audio equipment chances are you'll be investing a couple grand at the least to get a different setup running. He shouldn't be charging you for anything in wall unless he plans on patching up all the holes. Personally I'd tell him to leave the rack and take the rest of his shit. |

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Just an update guys, the seller was not giving any bargain prices by any means on this used equipment. I decided to keep things simple and not take any of his equipment. I will have all the TV mounts already on the walls (going to use 55" Samsungs), all the speakers in wall / ceiling are staying, and the unit is all wired up so it shouldn't be too big of a job to complete.
I will be in the market for a receiver and all the supporting components. If anyone has any recommendations in the San Diego area for parts/professional install, please send me a PM. Thank you very much!

One thing you may consider is that closet the receiver is in....Onkyo's run very hot and I would imagine things might get warm in there when you have it cranked for a 2 hour movie. Onkyo's are good, but there are many other options out there like Denon, Yamaha, Pioneer Elite, Marantz. My neighbor has an Onkyo....when we crank movies we can hear them in eachother's houses lol. I have always been a Pioneer guy and I have an Elite, but I am not happy with it. If I change I will probably get the upper end Marantz. Just make sure you have enough "zones" to run all those speakers. If you are a gamer the PS3 is supposedly a good blu-ray player. There are alot of blu-ray players out there that are good, but I think the consensus is that OPPO makes the best one, but it is more expensive than I care to pay. You should be able to find something under $200 for the player, something in the $1500 range for the receiver, and be very happy. If $ is no object I would buy the upper end NAD receiver and the OPPO. I would imagine that would run you all $4-5k. It's your pocketbook.... The hard part of running all the speaker wires is over for you. I don't run other zones and I am not sure how you hook up 17 speakers....my receiver only has 7 or 9 speaker outputs I believe. You need to research this because it may narrow down your receiver choices needing all those outputs. You may also want an HDMI input on the front....easy to plug in the computer etc. Read up on some of the home theater/audio forums and have some fun buying your new shyt. Good luck. |
