Are these actually a good deal?
I get the AMEX daily wish email and I've been looking to switch back to a PC. They have a few of the new thinkpads for what seem to be good prices. Before I pulled the trigger I figured I would ask for opinions since I'm sure some of you guys follow technology a lot more than I do.

Lenovo is a very good laptop, they tend to focus on business oriented people, and reliability for the traveler

My room ate paid 5 grand for a laptop that didn't perform as well as a computer less than half its value. The reason for its high price was weight. Lots of more affordable options with similar specs...

We used to use T-61's for our work laptop. They were solid. I had no issues with them. We've then switched to HP Elitebooks and now they're breaking down left and right.

After working in IT for 15 years I will never buy a computer that comes with Windows.

haha, I was waiting for that...I like the simplicity of OSX and it's been pretty stable for me. But as a finance major, excel 08 for mac is a joke, I have to go back to 03 version for it to even be usable. And submitting documents to professors online is a real hassle, they can never seem to open anything correctly.

Excel '08? Going back for '03? Are you kidding me? MS Office 2011 for Mac has been out since OCTOBER of last year!

Honestly though, this debate has nothing to do with my question.

'11 should be able to save as an '07 workbook. Should also be able to buy through your school with student discount. A lot cheaper than buying a new laptop.

my school will give me 08, don't think they have '11. I know I should be able to save it correctly, but people alway complain about not being able to open it, part of it is probably them being retarded, but some may be legitimate. And I might sell my MBP so it would be a wash anyway.

My ex-gf had similar file compatibility issues with her Mac and 08. I always chalked it up to user error. Maybe not. See if they have '11 though

The only file incompatibility issues I have seen with office is when someone saves the file in the new XML .docx or .xlsx formats (Default in newer Office versions) and sends them to people with an older version of the office.
But that "issue" is by design, to drive people to upgrade their old Office installations.
