Pneumonia
So my daughter has pneumonia. I took her to the doctor because she had a 102.1 temperature. My question is how do I keep her cool without getting her more sick? The doctors here aren't really any help (if you been to a military doctor then you know) all they saying is keep her cool and full of fluids. Do I keep the a/c on and have her wear summer clothing or do I keep giving her cold pedialyte? She 7 months so there is not to many medicines that I can give here. Any advice would be helpful thanks.

Hey lope!
Sorry to hear man. A/c will own her sinus. A wet hand towel on the forehead always works. Hope she gets better soon!

they sell soft gel packs for the forehead at CVS or Walgreens. It's the best way to lower temperature without the use of meds.
http://www.cvs.com/CVSApp/catalog/sh...ump&navCount=3 it's important to keep the head cool. Anything over 107 can cause brain damage. |

High temp is sign of infection. You have to make sure that she is getting heavy duty medication (antibiotic, penicillin) to take care of that. As soon as they start working, her temp will go away or reduced drastically. In the meantime, hand towels dipped in cold water on the forehead and back of the neck will do wonder. Also, dipping her bare feet in bowl off cold water does it too.
I had Pneumonia when I was around 28 and almost died because of misdiagnosis by two different doctors who thought it was Bronchitis and gave me strong cough medicine to control coughing up phlegm. That's exactly opposite of what needs to be done since the lung infection got worse and worse. Finally a double shot of Penicillin by the third doctor after running a blood test, did it for me. Good luck and take care of her. PM me if you need more info. Last edited by Tondtar; 04-27-2011 at 02:56 PM.. |

Since she's that young, it's better to use only cool towels, not really cold. It's the evaporation that does most of the cooling.
Keep an eye on her and make sure she doesn't shiver, that's too much cooling for a little one. I'd be taking the temp every 10 minutes or so to make sure it doesn't go any higher. Much higher and I put her in a luke-warm bath. Measure the bath water temp, make it about 90 if possible. I remember when my little brother hit 105. He was freaking on the ceiling glitter (we were traveling) and then he tried to crawl into the toilet to cool off . . . ALL the pedialyte she will drink. |

Cool towels and bath not cold as that will ramp the body to try and heat internallly. Water approximately 5 to 10 degrees cooler than normal body temps is usually most tolerable. Plus 1000 on the pedialyte and even the pedialyte popsicles if she can will keep her hydrated. It's hard on little ones. I feel your pain and hers.
I hear you on military docs, was raised in a navy family and if you think it's bad now you should have been there in the 60's. I had fillings done without novacaine and my family wonders why I shudder and refuse to go to the dentist nowadays. I even had to wear those damn navy issue dungarees until I was old enough to get a job and buy my own clothes, junior high school I got teased to no end people whistling the pipe me aboard tune when I walked by. No wonder I evil little shit back then!! |

happy to hear that.
speaking of pneumonia, i heard some bad news today. my friend's dad is going through chemo and one thing the treatments can do is knock out your immune system. so it's very easy to get an infection. his dad had a fever last weekend and it keeps getting worse. first trip to the hospital they couldn't find any infection, so said it was viral and he should rest. last night his fever spiked and he went to the hospital again. turns out he has pneumonia. |

Im sure you have some temp lower medicines... Paradoxally the fastest and easiest way to lower temperature is get under warm blanket, drink raspberry tee and some hot broth and other HOT tea's , and when you start to sweat it is alright cause sweat will cool body down. So ... if you wanna cool down - make yourself as hot as possible. ( this works best when you have really HIGH temperature. if not very high just do what guys wrote above.
Glad your daughter is better though! |

You don't. Fever is part of the bodies response to infection. New science confirms what we always suspected, that fever is not dangerous.
I would just give either Tylenol or advil as directed by you child's doctor.
