Job offer - on the fence...

I have an offer on the table for a great opportunity, with a great company. The pay is a boost of about $12,000, but I'd eat most of that up in commute costs. My current commute is 10 minutes one way, and this commute would be an hour one way (from 4 miles to 44). The hours could be helatious at times (wee hours of the morning). The perks are awesome.

Would you do it?

How is the opportunity for advancement? I'd say it's worth it imo

It is the same title I've had in the past, but with a much better company. My current employer has really gone downhill as of late, and the flattening of the organization has left most of us with titles that don't reflect what we do, and therefore don't look good on resumes. The position, while similar as previous roles, would be very visible with this company. The company is highly respected, and I've actually been a customer of theirs for years.

An extra $12k and additional benefits wouldn't be worth it if you hate your job. If you like the work and the advancement opportunities are there, go for it.

It sounds like the perks and benifits of the new position / company solidly outweighs the cons of the long commute, I'd say go for it.

If the commute length is of concern, is it an option to move closer?

I'd consider stability. Sounds like your current company is a sinking ship (or at least your department). Having any job is better than no job.

A short commute makes ALL the difference. Aside from not being a morning person a long commute in and a long commute home can make for a rotten day. Friday afternoons were always esp bad for my last job since most people head to I5. On a three day weekend forget it.

GL!

^^^If it's in Chicago, and he's moving into the city, he'll probably end up making less (relatively speaking). lol

That is always an option. However, the real estate market being what it is, and the fact that I love my house, would lead me to just stick to the commute. At least for now.

The commute certainly isn't like driving the 'Ring, but I still love time spent in my E90!

It's in the burbs. I live in the distant burbs. Based on the Fed mileage reimbursement rate, I'd break about even.

Not really. My current company isn't a sinking ship, just sucks to work for now. I'm bored out of my mind, and I just don't like our approach anymore. The amount of beauracracy around here is amazing. The new company appears to have none of that crap, or at least much less of it, based on their values.

Thanks for all the opinions. I'm leaning towards taking the plunge. Sometimes it helps to hear the advice of strangers.

So it sounds like you have already made up your mind. All of our answers are just positively reinforcing your choice. I say go for it, and if nothing else, a change of scenery may be all the difference in the world!

LI to NYC for 5 years. Live in NYC now... Never been happier. That commute was awful. However, the place he is with now doesn't work for him. If he has the opportunity to move to a place that is more his style for higher pay. The commute is worth it. The stress of driving for 2 hours a day can't compare to the stress of dealing with workmates who suck.

I can be a grumpy pants sometimes in the morning, but a better job will make a longer commute a lot easier. Ive had a job where i had to drive 3min with no traffic, but i hated the job eery single day.

Take the job.

Go for it. Sounds like you're not even happy at the old job, so you would only stay out of complacency. New place has much more potential from what you describe and the only downside seems to be the commute.

if the commute consisted of sitting in rush hour traffic at all that would be way too much stress for me. If it is not sitting in traffic the whole time then go for it.

If the company is a lot more stable than your current employer, that might be a big reason to take the job offer. Say you decline the job offer and then in 6 months your company goes under or has mass layoffs? Then you would be left with nothing. Also, if there is a good opportunity for growth, I would definitely take the job.

I'm only a student so maybe there is something I'm missing since I'm not actually in the workforce. But, I did compare your situation to mine. I chose to go to a college that is a 45 minute commute from my house instead of the college that is only 20 minutes away. Why? Because the college that I am attending now is known for their Accounting program. I'm hoping that my decision will lead to better opportunities when I'm done with school. In your situation, you take the job offer and working for a respected company can possibly open up more doors for you in the future. It's just something to think about. Try not to let the idea of a long commute change you decision.

It usually takes me 20 hrs to get to my job, luckily I only have to drive to the airport, fly out, connecting flight, hotel, shuttle bus and helicopter ride every 3 weeks.
It all comes down to the people you will work with, one bad person makes for a long day.

Goodluck !!
