Here's an interesting stat out of the Wall Street Journal - BMW is the most widely owned auto brand among holders of American Express' Centurion (aka "Black") Card.

For those not familiar, AE's legendary "Black Card" is offered only to extremely high net worth individuals and constructed from anodized titanium.

The average Centurion has $16.3 million in assets and an annual household income of $1.3 million. The Black Card is said to have a nearly unlimited line of credit and a slew of card benefits, such as automatic airline upgrades, concierge and travel agent service, favored positioning for sporting events and other perks which are only known to the cardholders.

22% of Black Card Holders say they own a BMW, the highest proportion of any auto brand.

Here is the top autos list:

BMW - 22%
Mercedes - 21%
Porsche - 15%
Lexus - 11%
Ferrari - 8%
Acura - 7%
Hyundai - 6%

If you think it interesting that Hyundai is on the list above many other brands that didn't make it, you're not alone. The source for this data was a WSJ article highlighting exactly that.

Honestly, I've seen a lot of high net worth folks driving Hyundai's (they were in plenty of garages in Osterville, MA this past week, including ours)...the Santa Fe seems to be a favorite for its utility, warranty and price (depreciation).

I used to have one of these. The perks are nice, but the membership was 5,000 dollars a year. I once tried to book last minute reservations at a fancy restaurant in Los Angeles, and was told that they were completely booked. I called the Centurion Concierge, and 10 minutes later I had a table. The cards are made of titanium too. It would always elicit a double take when I handed it over for payment. I'm so over that. I's rather spend $5,000 on mods than a silly card.

I can't imagine paying $5K the first year and $2.5K each subsequent year when I know folks that receive them for free. That's a lot of moula for the benefits!

Father got an invite but declined. Says that he really doesn't need the benefits. :dunno: Trying to change his mind.

You also get perks/ discounts almost everywhere in manhattan. Like in Equinox, for example. It also helps in the airports because you get to skip the line.

It isn't a joke, it just is more on par with AmEx Platinum, but they call it Black...I don't know why though

We are no where near the 1.3 in annual household income (unless I'm being kept in the dark...) but my mom was offered the Amex Black and Visa black. The $5K annual membership fee was the nail in the coffin though. Still can't quite understand having to spend money to spend money.

I got a BMW VISA and I've never been much happier. These useless cards are nothing but vanity.
