2010 Jetta TDI DIED!!!!!!

What a day last night. After dropping the cat off at the vet for a few bills of problems we are heding to dinner and my wife's Jetta TDI died doing 50mph!! Engine just shut down johnny on the spot. No warning. Cranks but won't restart. Waited 1hr for the free tow truck to show up. I think it's the HPFP that took a shiz. Tow truck did the night drop at the local dealer. Now the dealer is saying they won't be able to get to it and see whats wrong until about 2-3pm!!! So that means if they don't have parts we are F'kd for a fix today. We bought the car new 18 months ago, it has 25k on it. What a bad deal. I'm just worried this will happen again if VW does not have a revised HPFP (or whatever the fault part is). I emailed the NHSTA this morning telling them what happen. This is B.S. Car is maintained to perfection.

Your VW dealer is saying that you'll only have to wait till 2-3 today? I don't know what dealership you go to but at our local VW/Audi when you drop off your car you won't see it again for at least a week. No loaners in sight.

Sorry for your problem but it's not too big of a deal unless they ask you to foot the bill. Even though this is a pretty inconvenient problem it is unrealistic to buy a car (ESPECIALLY from Germany) and expect that it won't have a single issue.

Also I love a Mk.V TDI. Girlfriend had one before getting her BMW.

I don't know the exact details, but a friend bought a jetta tdi and last I heard he elease going to try to lemon it, he believes it has a bad dash subassembly (wiring and what not). The car left him and his family stranded in Oregon (they live in the Gilroy California area) for almost a week while they waited for parts (there were other less serious problems along the way).

Good luck to your buddy on getting a lemon buy back for that. Might want to check the Cali lemon laws, they are very pro consumer but unless he's had the car at the dealer in the last 18 months for more than that week. it will be hard. With that said he should be able to easily recoop a settlement for his troubles though.
My son works at a Hyundai dealer across the street from a VW dealer and says he sees cars towed in all day long.

I worked for VW for about 2yrs. Lots of cars came in by tow truck... In my opinion there cars are junk. Although the diesels they make are the best motors they have. A guy I work with has an '05 and an '08 jetta tdi. The '05 is an auto and the newer one has a 6spd. The '05 has almost 200K miles and the only major issue was a cam follower let go last year and destroyed the head, one piston and connecting rod. It was about 3K for parts. That car has had its timing belt changed twice, (I showed him how to do it the first time) water pump, fuel pump, glow plugs & harness. granted its not a Honda or Toyota but those diesels last.
My favorite diesel they made came in the toureg; that 5.0 V10 twin turbo was pretty awesome! 310hp/553ft lbs
With the JBD I have about that much HP/TQ in my little d!
I hope your jetta gets back on the road with no cost to you! Good luck.

That was just one example, he worked in the car industry for many years, and his dad is a partner in a dealer group so he is not going in uninformed.

Lemon lawing really comes out a loss for the consumer. You only do that if you HAVE to. This is the first issue we've had with the car. 2-3pm today to see what's going on. Then we wait for them to fix it. So it will be at least 2 days. probably more I'm guessing. Glad I filed this issue with NHSTA. Now we wait. No reason a new car now a days with 25k should do something like this. To me, this should be a TSB/Recall for whatever is causing this.

Odd, I owned an MKV GLI and I loved it. It was perfect, no issues at all during my ownership. When I did take it in for maintenance/warranty work they were always so helpful and prompt. Probably will give VW another shot whenever I pick up a DD.

Sorry about your issues.

I hate my VW dealership. Every time I have to take my MKVI Jetta in, it's always a run around. I took it in a couple months ago for a recall and warranty work. I was like no big deal, I'll just take a loaner, head to class and pick it up afterwards. My SA told me that there weren't any loaners available and that I had to get either picked up or wait. I had some time before class started so I decided to wait since it was only supposed to take an hour to an hour and a half to fix. I sat in the waiting room for two hours. I went and asked my SA how soon will the car be done. He told me that they haven't even started it! I called my mother to come and pick me up because I couldn't waste anymore time at the dealer. She came and picked me up. As we were pulling into our driveway, I got a call from my SA telling me that my car is done. I was furious at this point. So I had her drive me all the way back to the dealer so I could pick up my car. My SA told me the recall had been corrected but they couldn't find anything wrong with speaker (it was cutting out, crackling and popping). I grabbed my key, went into the garage where my car was, grabbed the nearest tech and played the radio for him. I asked him if that sounded like it was working properly and he said no. They had to order a speaker because they didn't have one in stock.

I'm almost upset that I bought the extended 5 year/100k mile warranty. I really hate going to the dealership for anything.

Has this has been a common problem with this engine like the HPFP with the N54? If so, it's definitely good to report it. If not, why would the NHSTA care in a single case like this? If it is a single case, I don't see why the NHSTA would get involved or a TSB/recall be created. Sometimes parts fail even on new or well maintained cars due to a manufacturing defect or the like. They are covering it under warranty right?

^If people don't report it it never happened. I don't have the data to tell you if 61.8 out of a 100 made are failing due to the same problem. I may be an isolated case, may be something bigger. Even the N54 Fuel Pump recalll.... there had to be that first guy.

Check this out at the VW forum. I am not alone!! This makes me very worried keeping this car long term. There are guys with 7k-9k repair bills when this happens the 2nd go-around. F'k this. Isolated my ass.

So, you report to the NHTSA that the HPFP failed on your car without hearing from the dealer that that was what failed?

Just wondering.....

^no. just reported it stalled at 50mph with no warning and would not restart, year, make, engine and mileage.

Gets worse...

http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=286380

Reports of this happening at 3,100 miles. and at 30k, then at 40 or 60k. And VW only fixes the first one.

That's not good. It does say that more and more dealers are seeing this problem. Good Luck !!!

Volkswagens are seriously a POS. Can't even count how many time my friends VW broke down. This include older and newer gen Jetta and Golf.

Dealer called. Confirmed the HPFP blew apart. Said it's 3 days to get the parts in and a few days to repair it. It is covered under warranty (verbally over the phone). Getting a rental tonight for the wife. All the articles I found on the web regarding this issue were dated Feb 2011. And there has been no recall. What pisses me off is there are people who had this happen at 30k, dealer fixes it for free then at 50k it happens again and they are charging people the $7-10k to fix it!!! HOLY SHIZI. I'm going to request this part and repairs be warrntied for up to 100K or 10/yrs (like a Hyundai LOL!). Not the typical 60k. If they fail to do so we may dump just before the powertrain warranty. Probly get her something more reliable like a C benz, or Lexus.

re: recall
considering how many 335s had their HPFP...it took quite a while and a NBC news coverage for them to do a recall

Recalls are expensive and they rarely do them from what I can understand

yup. Well met with the SA today. No extended warranty. No recall yet. I'm not keeping a car like this. We are under warrnty until 60k. Will be gone before that point. She drives 22k/yr. It's at 25 and change... so by 12-18 months it will be gone. No more diesels.

VW for the most part is complete shit... I had the first gen Touareg and it was the most un-ergonomically designed and unreliable car ever. Everyone, I know with a VW... Jetta, Passat included has had massive amounts of problems.

Hpfp and cam follower (if yours apply) should be extended for up to 120k miles or "x" amount of years. I need to find the letter I received to verify.

I owned an 08 MKV GTI FSI for 15 months under CPO warranty. Items were replaced/repaired during this time:

Rack and pinion
Shock mounts
Cam follower
Camshaft damaged by cam follower
High pressure fuel pump failure
Coil packs
Diverter valve

Shocks were dead at 40k miles and of course, not covered under wear and tear.

I traded in the ticking time bomb 15 months after a horrible CPO ownership.
