Anyone have luck with Auto Trader?
I need to sell my car fairly quickly and haven't had much luck with the forums and craigslist. I wanted to stay away from auto trader but I feel like I don't have that many options left.
Has anyone here been in a similar situation? What was your luck with auto trader? Are they more serious buyers or joyriders? Any input is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I bought my 1999 Subaru Impreza 2.5rs back in 2003 and a friend recently bought a 2010 Camaro through Autotrader and both were easy fast transactions.

sold multiple cars and bikes there. last car i sold in '08 was '01 VW Jetta.
for some reason did not get a single call for the first 2 weeks, despite the fact that the ad was printed in the magazine and shown on the site. then 2 weeks later i got a flood of calls. sold that very same day.

Autotrader and Cars.com have been good. eBay and Craigslist only lead to joyrides and rich CEOs who claim that their secretaries will write some kind of cashier's check.

I'm not sure if they still do but they used to make you pay to list a car so generally it has less scams, as you will notice a lot of dealerships post there as well as locals. I've purchased off the site before and had a good experience.

Sold many cars on autotrader (vw golf, acura legend, Integra R, bmw 323, mini cooper s, some cars sold quicker than others, the Integra R was on there for close to a year but all the other sold within a month or 2. Craigslist and forums are a waste of time...

I sold a car on autotrader about 8 years ago. Sold in a few weeks but the car was an old POS and this was pre-craigslist. I sold my 2008 GTI on craigslist in less than 24 hours so I'm not sure why anyone would call it a waste of time.

If you do go with Autotrader, make sure to go ahead and include as many good pics as possible, plus pay a few extra bucks to get the listing a little bit of pizzazz. I forget exactly which extras I used, but there are some that are dumb and some that really do bring the ad to the forefront.
I guess another question I'd ask is how many cars within... say... 50 miles of you are the same make/model? The more there are, the harder you'll have to work to get your ad noticed over the others. |

I've sold 5 cars on Autotrader. 3 of those I put up on forums first (NSX,FD,GS-R) and got nothing but grief from 'buyers' there. Once the Autotrader ad went up I sold the cars fairly quickly. I think you get connected to a lot more real buyers and less tire kickers than you will get from the forums. Well worth the cost IMO.

I sold my 2004 330ci ZHP on Autotrader quickly with no problems. You'll have to pay some, especially to show pics. However the $50-60 price to list the car was well worth the price over wasted time.
Craigslist and car forums were just a waste of time with no one who was really interested. |

I used autotrader and Kijiji at the same time. Worked well, and cars were sold within 2 weeks.
Take your time to make Carproff/carfax be available for the buyer and take pictures with a very nice camera. Good luck
