9 Things You Should Know About the New 991 TT

Saw this on another forum, but nothing on M3post. Hopefully this is not a repost.

By the Road & Track Staff April 30, 2013

-It's PDK-only and stupid fast. And that's not all.
-It has active aero. A rubber tube similar to a bicycle tire runs along the underside of the front spoiler. In Sport Plus mode, it fills with air, extending downward as a spoiler to swap the 911’s inherent front-end lift for slight downforce. Top speed is limited to 196 mph on the Turbo S because it’s all the tires can handle—otherwise the new rocket would be capable of 207.
-The optional ceramic brake discs measure 16.1 inches in front, 15.4 in the rear. In other words, they're enormous.
-In the past, Turbo models used the Carrera 4’s wide body. This time, the Turbo is even wider. C4 models are 1.7 inches wider than the base 911; add another 1.1 inches for the Turbo!
-Angry mobs, grab your pitchforks. There's no more manual—PDK is the only transmission now. The center differential is now a computer-controlled, water-cooled Haldex unit that can send 13 percent more power up front.
-Additional boost (up to 17.4 psi) and additional revs (up to 7200) means additional power: the Turbo makes 520 hp and 479 lb-ft. The Turbo S makes 560 hp and 516 lb-ft. Each motor gets an overboost function, producing another 37 lb-ft for up to ten seconds.
-Like the GT3, the 911 Turbo uses rear active steering for more maneuverability at low speeds and more stability at high speeds.
-The Turbo’s roof can be painted, made of glass, or made of carbon fiber, a la the GT3 Cup car.
-Not that anyone cares, but the Turbo uses some 13% less fuel than the last one. Partial thanks go to the virtual-gear programming in the PDK that uses clutch slippage to “fake” an appropriate gear ratio. It aims to keeps revs near 1000 rpm under low-speed, low-load conditions. Start/stop is standard, and now turns the engine off under 4 mph.
-The last Turbo and Turbo S flew around the Nürburgring in 7:39 and 7:37, respectively. The new car does it in under 7:30, meaning it could match the Carrera GT’s 7:25. Look for a 0-60 time of around 3 seconds flat.

In case you haven't seen it without camo:

Love the way GT3 looks, not thrilled about MT not being offered.
Not impressed with the way the Turbo looks, still not thrilled about MT not being offered.

This better not mean that the 997's will retain their values more!

I'm with you, I agree with everything you said in that bottom section. I would personally buy a Cayman R instead of the Turbo.

My old 3000GT has a front air dam that activated at speed and 4 wheel steering, not new technology. Although it didn't have that much power or a sophisticated transmission. Looks like the recipe for a great car!

Can anyone explain WHY this thing is still slower than GTR around the Nürburgring ring?

Driven by the same driver, in controlled conditions, I don't think you'd see the GT-R be faster. Shave the tires, toss in a roll cage, hire a driver, give him tons of time on the Ring in the car, and you too can post GT-R times like Nissan did.

So you are saying that Porsche engineers (knowing that their machine is possibly faster than say GTR and also spending $$$ in R&D) were too lazy to conduct a test and obtain best possible time at the ring?

"X-things you should know" is such a cheesy title. They don't know anything more that what is posted on forums.

Those whining the loss of manual, better get the one of the normal 991's, because next generation, after facelift will have no more manual gearbox. M3 too by the way. Why? Because of costs. To few are sold, but developed is there. No investment in development, you get "bad" manuals like M3 E9X. Bad gearbox in returns give a bad image, and the company doesn't want that.

No, I'm saying Porsche is moderately honest. If you happen to be Hans Stuck or Hurley Haywood, there's a chance you could lay down a similar N'Ring time on a closed track with a 911tt from your local dealer. Nissan isn't even that honest.

You say this like a bad auto has never been made. Wasn't the SMG a let-down? Weren't people having problems with the DSG in VWs for quite a while? How about the decades of automatics made prior to 2005? I find this sentiment hilarious as I just spent a week in Rome and both luxury-ish cars that drove us to/from the airport (a C-class and an E-class) were manual.

Says the guy that pretends to know everything about the F8x M3/4. So what you are saying is that they developed a completely new 7 speed MT, one of the first in the world, to cancel it after 5-6 years? Doubtful.

The way Porsche are doing things: "regular" Porsches such as Boxter, Cayman and Carreras will get MT as an option. The GTx and Turbos are PDK only. You're telling me that Porsche will offer absolutely no MT's in their entire lineup before this decade is over?

And you are right. The MT in the E9x is so absolutely horrendous, making it the worst M3 ever, image wise.

Porsche seems to be very conservative with times, and they usually win on the track.

People always find shit to whine about. This will be amazing and most likely fulfill the role just as well as it's done in its past iterations.

Both GM and Nissan use "tricks" to get unrealistic ring times. Porsche and other manufactures are more interested in building a better car.

Good to see it's a PDK only. If they offered MT for this car and not for the GT3, i would be furious.

Beautiful! Cant wait to see what this thing does. I imagine it will top the 997.2 turbo S which was a high 10 second car 130 mph. Love seeing the proper attention given to all apsects of this car and love that its another inch plus wider than even the C4/S models.

Oh wait, you're serious.

The Corvette and GT-R have more than proven their performance on other tracks.

I love the wheels in the second set of pics. (I know, same design, but I prefer the finish on the second set)

I also like the design of the new turbo, the 997 turbo was a little busy
