iPhone 5S- thoughts?
Revolutionary or evolutionary? Would you get one?
I actually like the new gold and space gray colors. The space gray looks very sleek and the gold just stands out. It's growing on me. |

Evolutionary. Though its features are less gimmicky than the S4's. I would get one if I was eligible to upgrade. But, I am on the 4,5,6, etc iPhone cycle.
Touch ID looks like it will actually work and not a POS like laptop fingerprint scanners. |

I think I'm more excited about iOS7 itself than the iPhones, because the fluidity and the user experience has always been the iPhone's selling point for me.
The iPhone 5S is the 1st 64bit phone, but then the Apps will need to be 64bit for supporting it. And if it's anything like Windows' 64bit, I would worry a lot. So lets hope it all works out. The A7 chip does sound exciting with the M7 chip working alongside. Apple is claiming double the processing power of the A6 chip of the iPhone 5. My Geek side is I prefer iP5's Slate, but I guess Space Gray is okay. Jerez Black would have been better. Sunny

NSA is going to love the fingerprint sensor. I'm keeping my 5 and waiting for the 6.

I got my 5 in February and am going to be keeping it until I'm eligible for upgrade, so 1.5 more years I guess... I do like the 5S, but it's definitely worth the upgrade from the 5. People with the iPhone 5 will be able to get iOS7 right (I haven't looked into that detail yet)?

I feel like the 5S is setting it up for a spectacular 6!
By then the 64 bit architecture should be fully taken advantage of. I have a feeling they will add NFC. Imagine being able to buy something by using NFC + finger print scanner. I don't know how NFC currently works on other devices, but I think you have to put in some sort of passcode to activate it? Right now seems faster to just take out my credit card. I could be wrong though

Bloomberg has had my print for a decade and my office and bank both require a print read to enter. The Federal govt has also had it for years since I have a C&C permit. Not really worried about Apple having a tiny sliver of one of my prints.

They will need access to the phone as its stored in the A7. It's not transmitted wirelessly to Apple servers, iCloud, etc. Only way the NSA will get your fingerprint is if they have the 5S in their hands.

I have the GM of iOS7... it is amazing. HUGE upgrade in software.
If I can get an upgrade from Verizon, I will probably be getting the gold/beige iPhone 5S

I will probably get the phone, in large part because I can always sell my last gen to my brother at a "discount" and basically pay nothing for my phone. |

I would not upgrade from my 5 but looking forward to the 6. My 5 still runs great even with iOS7 on it. Not slow or laggy in anyway so I don't really feel the need for it to be any faster. I think iOS7 actually improved the performance for many things like the camera so I'm very happy with it. Hopefully by the time the 6 comes around they will have worked out any bugs with the finger print stuff and have a bit more stuff to include in the 6.

The "S" models are always intended to be evolutionary. Not worth an upgrade from a 5, but I'll probably upgrade my 4S since I'm paying a subsidized rate anyway.
Biggest disappointment: 64 GB has been the biggest size for several generations, and it's been a $100 upgrade this entire time. I have 30 gig of music, 20 gig of apps 'n stuff, plus pics and video. Highway robbery, probably intended to direct people to cloud services. I like to travel without roaming and go out to the sticks though so I need onboard storage. I also wouldn't mind if they made it thicker with more battery life so I wouldn't need a battery case. If the 5C were available in 64 I'd probably get that. I like how they went with bigger, instead of more, camera pixels. The lens is probably more the limiting factor for resolution, so I'll take the low-light performance and smaller filesize of the bigger pixels. The tech is definitely maturing, so I'm not sure what they could do that's revolutionary at this point for the 6. NFS would be nice, especially with the fingerprint scanner. They should also offer a bigger version (same number of pixels to simplify the app development- just bigger) for people with poor eyes or big fingers. I'd love to see an SD card slot, even if it was locked down so it only stored photos and videos. Maybe wireless charging, too...then we wouldn't have to worry about that proprietary port. Long-long term, I'd love to see a phone with a flexible screen that unfurls so you can have a big screen when you need it. Or, perhaps both sides of the phone could have screens on them and it folds open clamshell style to have one big screen with a seam down the middle. Being fully waterproof would be nice, as would lighter, tougher materials like carbon fiber. Last edited by carve; 09-11-2013 at 11:26 AM.. |

Is it slower on the 5 than iOS6? Slow and less responsive? All my iPhones have been notorious for becoming very lagging when upgraded the iOS which is meant for the 'new' phones

Fuck Apple. Biometrics is not a new thing. Reinventing the wheel that won't be used IMO. Biometrics are good for identity management, not simple authentication.

I completely agree about on-board storage. While cloud services are great for some things, they are not end all be all solution for mobile or IT in general for that matter.
