Hi, can anyone tell me if I need to notify my insurance company that I just purchased a puppy?
Will I be penalized on my homeowners insurance? Also, would someone be so kind to tell me how to post a photo from my iphone? Or, provide the link to the instructions. |

I've never heard of having to declare pets on a homeowners insurance policy.

The insurance for my puppy is $749 every 6 months, not including uninsured puppy coverage. I use the insurance from that woman on TV, you know the one in the white apron. Take your puppy to obedience class for 5% discount. No alcohol until the puppy is 3 human years.

You laugh but my insurance (USAA) has actually asked whether we own dogs and if so what breed. Golden retriever is likely not an issue but owning a pit bull, rottweiler (sp?), doberman or other "aggressive" breed will push your liability rates higher... Not saying I agree with it but it happens. And if you own one of these breeds without informing your insurance company I could see them making it an issue should have a bite or other dog related claim.
Edit: And congrats on the GR, they are a great breed. Really good with kids...

It is the insurance company's responsibility to periodically ask about new pets or insert a condition into the policy that states you have to proactively inform them. Check your policy to see what is covered and what your responsibilities are. I used to work for a large insurer and have a hard time believing any company would raise your rates because of a lab.
I have a pit (sweetest dog ever) and an American bulldog. We informed our insurer prior to purchasing a policy and there was a negligible increase from what we would have paid otherwise. Some companies are better than others, so if yours gives you a problem shop around. |

I added an umbrella policy to my insurance for my two Rottweilers but the insurance company told me the breed was no longer covered so I had to find new insurance.
I doubt your insurance will say no to having a golden retriever...

Insurance companies will definitely ask you if you're applying for new coverage (mine did when we bought our house), however if you already have coverage then I don't think you're under any obligation to let the insurance company know.
Mine gave me a little guff when I told them we have a Staffordshire Bull Terrier but I informed them that she's 33lbs and full grown. Ah stigmas...

Hmm... I've owned dog's for over 10 years now and have never added them to my insurance. My insurance company (USAA) has never asked either...

The one time I am sure USAA asked was when I increased the size of my umbrella policy. Have had standard homeowners with them for so long, can't recall if they ever asked as part of that policy. But for the increase in my umbrella coverage they certainly did...

I don't want to derail this thread, but +1 for pics of the pup too.
My old Golden Retriever was probably the best dog in the world. She lived to be 14 too. I cried when we had to put her down... She was a darker color Golden. Quite a few people confused her with an Irish Setter, which I now I have two of (see below).
