996 turbo or ferrari 355?
so i'm at the point in my life where i can comfortably buy one of these (cash). i had a 996 carrera in my mid-20's and it was a great car: didn't pay for any repairs out of warranty, just changed the oil and bought 2 tires. would have probably kept it but didn't have the cash when the lease was up.
both are readily available for ~$40k. i don't race/track, and only put about 5k miles/yr combined on my 2 current cars. what do you think? |

i personally love 90's stuff... for 70k i'd find a good 512tr. styling, ferrari hands down imo. i'm more concerned about ownership cost (insurance, maintenance, etc) Last edited by amanda hor$t; 10-29-2013 at 04:18 AM.. |

A 996tt and a 355 were at the track yesterday. The 996 still looks good from the outside (inside is dated) but the Ferrari looks dated all around. Nice car still but I think the Porsche is better all around in this comparison.

The 996 is the ugliest Porsche of all time. 355 looks and sounds way better, not sure what eye's most of these poster are looking through. That said, it is exponentially cheaper to maintain and rack up miles on the Porsche. Can't find an early 997.1 Turbo or GT3 around 50k?

i can buy a new one if it was important enough. but again, 40k is all i would spend on a trophy car. 360 is nice, i don't think it's a good deal compared to a clean 355. (and i'm just shopping for now)

Depends on what you are looking for, both cars have pretty different driving characteristics, especially when it comes to what they're packing in the back.

If you are going to drive it, get the Porsche.
I love the 355, but its one of the last Ferraris that can't be serviced in a sensible way. Starting with the 360 they put some access panels in and what not so you can get at the engine without removing it from the car. |

With that being said, rolling around in a 355 would awesome, but for the money, I think a Porsche would be a much better option. If you started looking into 360 territory, I would change my mind. |

996 Turbo. I don't find you to be the type of guy who's willing to shell out $10k for service which, at a minimum, requires the entire engine to be taken out of the car.

I rarely would say Porsche but I am this time. The 355 is a nightmare. Go for the 360 and save yourself a lot of money. The 355 is my favorite Ferrari however not worth the bank roll to keep it alive. Get a 360 or a 430.

Timeless. The 360 also still looks amazing even today. I can't say the same for the older Porsches, but I've never been a P-Car fan myself.
We had a joke with my friend who owns 2 Ferraris. He would say every time you need to take the car in, some guy named Giuseppe has to swim from Italy and hand deliver the parts, which is why the service is so expensive. Do your research but common sense would dictate maintaining an older Ferrari would be more costly. It's a beautiful car though, and has my vote. Make sure to post pics |

My vote would be the 355 between the two but you may find yourself with significantly less disposable income after maintaining it for a few years.

edit. If you are very serious about a 355 go to Ferrari Chat and find a well sorted out 355. There is a couple right now that is worth the time and money. |

I love the look of the 355, especially in certain colors. Silver, in particular, looks great on that car.
I do think something like a Testa Rossa looks quite dated with all of the louvers and sharp edges but the F355 still looks great to me.
