How powerful is US military?

I know that US military is the strongest in the world; best trained, best technology and etc... But seeing how there are lot of members on here with military background I thought I would get an interesting insight.

The U.S. military is probably the "most powerful" insomuch as the U.S. is the wealthiest nation on earth (this is an objective fact) and thus the U.S. military isn't as limited by resources (i.e. money) as other, less prosperous nations.

Other than that it's pretty hard to quantify something like how "well trained" one nation's military is compared to another nation's military.

The U.S. probably has the most advanced, up-to-date technology but I'm not really sure, and I also don't know how technologically advanced other nations are either.

Definitely the strongest and best military in the history of the world.

Yet - the US does not manage to win the peace even though the US wins the war.... Sad.

The US definitely has the best Navy. Until the carrier has been dethroned as king of the sea, the US will have among the best if not the best Navy's. Most other nations carriers are the size of our assault ships(that operate the harrier and soon to be the F-35, Osprey, etc). They typically hold about 40 aircraft. No one currently and in the near future will have a carrier that will be able to go against our fleet or super carriers that can carry 90+ aircraft. Not only are they smaller, but they only have about 2 carriers if that compared to our 9 currently in commission.

The only nation that I can see being able to compete with our Navy in the future is China. They will be the only ones to have the resources to build and operate nuclear powered super carriers that could go up against a Nimitz and Ford class carrier.

I have a feeling this might eventually move to the politics section

In short, it's related to how much we spend on our military which is more than all of the other counties in the world combined. That fact blew my mind.

/Edit/ Actually more than the following 11 top countries combined.

Not true? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...y_expenditures

As a % of GDP, we're a little higher than almost all other countries, but not statistically out-of-whack. See Eritrea for example (21% of GDP spent on military).

One also has to account that our military is probably more spread out across the globe than every other country.

He was probably talking about absolute expenditures, not expenditures as a percentage of GDP.

Thanks! Edited. Guess it's only more than the following top 11 countries combined.

Even in absolute expenditures, it's about 1/3, not more than 1/2. See same chart.

officially, only the russians have a working anti-icbm system (satellites). but nearly all the nuclear powers have nuclear armed subs, so that's not a silver arrow. china has plans to broadly expand their carrier fleet, as long as they maintain their economy, having an equally powerful (or more powerful) navy is inevitable. also, china's standing army is comparable to america's, and they actually have to turn enlistees away (i.e. in an actual war with drafting/conscripts, their army could triple fairly easily)

if america loses a war, it won't be from being out-gunned or out-manned, it'll be from bankruptcy and infighting.

If you are talking the history of the world, the title of the most powerful would go to the British.

Im a soldier in the Army , Im a 12Bravo (combat engineer) Sapper. I have trained with some other countries soldiers and would have to say we def are better trained ,Of course it is up to the individual and how much training he actually intakes(IMO).Their are many countries out there who seemingly crush us in numbers. America's full military still only accounts for less then 1% of the nations population. But a close 2nd i would have to say are the Israeli's

I don't have a source/too lazy to actually search. I heard though, that US Air Force has the most planes of any military in the world. Second place, goes to the US Navy. Also, our Navy itself has more planes than china.

Once again, these are things i've heard, and i can't give a source

being a former Marine, i can tell you that i am very proud of all of our service members, their contributions and their sacrifices.

i would also openly say that i strongly believe that our Force Recon Marines/Green Berets/NAVY Seals are the best trained military personnel in the world.

there is a big difference being a typical "Marine" and being a highly trained killer in a tiny elite group known as NAVY SEALS or Marine Force Recon...

i could argue that the training they do is second to none, but i will NEVER openly say that some of these desert freaks in Al Quiaida are not some of the deadliest, toughest and dumbest people in the world.

only thing scarier than a highly trained and high educated NAVY Seal is a borderline retarded terrorist that has been drinking water and eating bread for the last 3 years dedicating himself in aiding to destroy the American Race.

al quiaida or any other terrorist organization does not have to follow anyones rules, so there is no "process" they follow.

they are just a bunch of savages that train 24/7 in weapons handling, killing and ruining everything in their path.

due to their lack of education, they are generally weak minded and easily brainwashed.

...and since there is no "oraginzation" to look over them, they typically train for long hours under some of the most brutal circumstances imagineable.

their "toughness and rugedness" is light years above any toughness that the US Military can legally train their personnel, but the terrorist could only DREAM of being able to follow an American blueprint that consists of over 200 years of ass kicking, war winning freedom......

they're terrorists, not some some sort of elite organization that has been curb stomping other countries to defend their own freedom....but they are some tough, pitbull minded zombie sons of bitches....
