Lets hear it for Cayman....

I've owned my N55 135i DCT for 1 year and 1 week now. In that period of time it has been to the dealer 6 times for various things. Most recently the CP blew off the throttle body...and my only mods are FMIC and BMS CAI. My warranty will be expiring at the end of May 2014. If this cars track record is a glimpse at my future after warranty, I don't want it any more. Also, the closest BMW dealer is over an hour from me. So every time I have to take it in I'm driving an hour there and an hour back home. The first few trips there were fun, now its just annoying. So, I've been looking at purchasing a 08'-10' non S Cayman. After reading so many upstanding things about there reliability and the little maintenance they require I think it could be the car for me. Plus, there is a VW dealer about 30 minuets from me. Which I would assume they would be able to service and work on a Cayman, any one know? I would just like to hear all of your opinions on the Cayman regarding it as a daily driver. Thank you.

A VW dealer will not work on a Cayman.

Obviously you're no longer in Dallas because there are a few BMW dealerships within an hour's drive. I wouldn't expect a VW dealership to be able to work on Porsches. Also, look into what the repair and maint costs are for Caymans. I'm sure they are more expensive than 335 parts.

Do you know for sure? VW does own Porsche...it really was just a shot in the dark for me though guess that VW could work on a Cayman.

I know my signature says Dallas, but I actually live in Commerce to be exact. Which is about an hour east of Dallas. So the closest BMW dealer to me has always been a little over an hour away. I just didn't expect to have to visit the dealer as often as I have. The repair and maintenance cost on the Cayman are similar to that of my 135, however the cost to own is less due to the fact you do not have to have repairs or maintenance done as often as a 135.

VW will look at a Cayman the same way a Mini dealer would look at a Rolls Royce, with absolutely no knowledge.

2009 is when the Cayman got a decent update, the non S got a six speed instead of a five and many oil issues were also corrected. However if you're looking for the cheapest possible maintenance experience, a Cayman will not be your friend. Oil changes, brake service, etc will all be more expensive than your 1er.

However if you don't need the rear seat, a Cayman is much more fun to drive than a 1er with much more neutral handling, better sounds and much more composed on a track. Note that the front trunk (frunk) is pretty big, but there's not a ton of space in the back trunk and the area behind the seats is pretty small. They're practical, but they are not nearly as spacious as a four seat car with a trunk pass through.

Well, I did a testdrive october 26 th with a 2013 Cayman S

Fully loaded, PCCB, Sportbucketseats, PDK, PASM, PTV, SCP, the works...

See;

http://www.autogespot.nl/porsche-cay...013/10/26#img1

Scroll down for movie and sound, yes that`s me all right

Impression;

Exterior is stunning IMO, interior on a very high level as well.

Overall it`s a sports car, more like the BMW ( Ido drive an E82 1M) which is more a compromise but IMHO the best compromise between sports and daily driving.

The power is there, but you`ll have to rev constantly over 4 K RPM, below there is nobody at home, of course due to the characteristic of a real NA engine, the 1M TT is something else in that respect, no comparo what so ever.
PDK is absolutely brilliant, but the gearing is somewhat long.
Brakes very solid, sport buckets to me not worth the money, there is a lack of lumbal support, normal sport-seats will do a better job, most certainly in daily driving.
The biggest disappointment to me was the lack of steering feeling, it`s electric and it feels a kind of numb, not really giving any feedback, the 1M on the other hand has an hydraulic steering rack, and it is far superior to the Cayman S electric one IMO.

I had a nice testdrive, it`s a stunning car, a real looker as you can see in the pics. A steering upgrade would be worth waiting for, also more power at low revs would be reccomendable. Good car, but would`t make a trade with the 1M as it is currently delivered, be advised, wait for an GTS could be an option.

Romo, there is a steering upgrade available, the previous Cayman had hydraulic steering. See if you can find a 2012 Cayman R to test drive.

VW would work on it and work over your wallet.
You need to have access to an all around German mechanic.
Honest with fair pricing etc..

Don't laugh, they are still out there.
Commerce??

The best mechanic I ever had was an old Polish guy.
He had a modest shop near Park Place Porsche .
Best BMW mechanic I have known.

It could save you mucho anguish if serious.

I hope you are aware of the torque withdrawal you will experience.
135 with mods to an non S Cayman .

They also own Bugatti and Lamborghini but they certainly don't work on those. Yes, I know for sure. My friend is a tech for VW and texted me back "LOL NO!" when I asked him to verify if they would touch a Cayman.

I'm very familiar with Commerce.
One thing to keep in mind is that the 335 has a few issues that once fixed dont seem to creep up very often. The car gets much more reliable once you take fix the common issues. Better days may be ahead of you reliability wise.

BTW, every time I see the title of your thread, I think of this

Seriously, don't bring your Porsche to a VW dealership unless you want to pay a 200% service premium.

Lol! I figured I had to have a stand out title to get peoples attention! I hope I don't have any more issues. I'm going to give my 135 one more chance to at least make it 2 months with no issues.

About the same distance as the BMW. However, my research has shown so far that I wouldn't need to take the Cayman into a dealer as much as I do with my 135.

The new Cayman S is a stellar; especially in Guard RED. I say: why not drive a Cayman S daily. It's fun, and the engine is reliable.
