[BMW F22]

I've been looking into picking up a good pair of headphones up to $400-500. Apparently there are a ton of them out there and a lot of them have great reviews. I have narrowed them down to the ones below. Please comment on them or if you have any other ones that are great for that price please do recommend them.

These are in no particular order.

1. V-Moda M-100
2. Audio Technica M-50
3. Sennheiser HD600/650
4. Sennheiser HD280
5. Ultrasone 900 (I'm throwing this in the mix just because)

I prefer closed headphones for listening at work and such, not just home. I included the HD600/650 because they are very highly rated on head-fi.org. I just picked up a pair of V-Moda Crossfade LP. While those are also highly rated, I would like to invest in a really good pair so I don't end up wasting money on the lower end ones.

I have HD580's. They are not bad, but too bulky.

These are actually half the price of what you're looking for, but I've used these for all my music recording and production needs and they are all around awesome.

You realize a lot of the headphones you posted arent closed right? Your co-workers will hear what you are listening to. Get a pair of HDJ-2000's if you want something good sounding, quality built, and closed.

anything meant for the 'studio' should have an open back to help produce a flat response. while that is nice for the studio... not so much for public listening. High end DJ head phones are your best bet.

Thanks for the recommendations/comments guys! After much thoughts I'm down to the V-moda m100, sennheiser hd-25, and the sennheiser hd650. Any thoughts on those?

I absolutely love my Bose noise cancelling whatever over-ears, for travel. I use their non-noise cancelling ear buds for running, and another pair at work while in the lab.

When I'm at home, I enjoy the Sennheiser 650 pieces. The fit is just awesome, no pressure around the head, bulky, yes, but a true pleasure.

i LOVED the Sennheiser 650's......

.....until i got myself a pair of Klipsch Image ONE's...

got two pair for my wife and i.....

the deep rumbling bass is what made me get the Klipsch instead of the Sennheiser....

they're not noise cancelling, but they fit ON the ear...

i test fit the Senn's and the Klipsch for @ 45 seconds with two seperate coworkers and the Klipsch felt waaaaay better, so i ordered them.

when i got them and actually started listening to music at work, my ear started hurting really bad after about 15 minutes - after a week i got used to it.

i like having them at work because the longest i typically go for without interruption is about 40 minutes...

the pair i got my wife is actually sitting at my home computer, so i put them on quite regularly if the wife is in the living room watching one of her Killer Wives shows lol....

for the price, they're hard to beat....

HD-25's are spectacular headphones. Pretty cheap too, which is always a plus.
Really depends on your ears. Its almost impossible for someone to describe a speaker/headphone to someone without extreme bias. Everyones ears are different.

Are you looking for the flattest response possible, or Hi-Fi?

Honestly, just go to guitar center with your ipod or w/e, and start plugging in your favorite song to each headphone (Use the same song) and see what you think. One of the headphones will jump out at you over the others, and that'll be the pair you walk out of the store with.

I have A&H XD-53's. If you don't DJ, do not buy those headphones. They have very exaggerated bass (this is good for loud clubs, but not listening music), they are heavy and uncomfortable. Your head would feel like its exploding after wearing those things for more than an hour.

I heard the Klipsch are pretty good but the sound quality isn't as good as the sennheiser. From what i heard it just has more bass.

Im not sure what the differences are between flattest responses and hi-fi. I might just go to a guitar center and try out different headphones. I thought i was set on the ath-m50 due to the stellar reviews. However, after trying out my buddy's m50 last night, i wasn't all that impressed. It was clear but I felt the highs were lacking a bit. I also didn't like the bass too much. I thought that it was a bit underwhelming.

Like I already said, that is a biased opinion. Clearly Greg thinks they are great. I use HDJ-2000's for listening enjoyment. Those are hyped DJ headphones and i think they sound phenomenal. In the studio however, they are almost entirely useless. Which is why I use AKG-702's in there. Both are absolutely great headphones, just on completely opposite ends of the spectrum.

Difference between flat response and Hi-Fi is pretty simple. Hi-Fi speakers will boost the db in certain *sweet spot* of the frequency range to make it sound better to people listening. A flat response will sound well... kind of dull (which is what you want in a studio, but not so much to enjoy listening to music):






Note on the graph, how the pioneers have a large boost in the low end and stay fairly flat in the mids. Then look at the AKG's, and notice how they are almost flat for most of the frequency range. (They honestly dont sound that great, but very revealing for mixes)

So pretty much, unless you are producing music or are a serious audiphile i wouldnt recommend anything with a flat response. It wont sound good to your ears.

Since someone else mentioned ear buds i mind as well throw my .02 on that as well. Klipsch's arent bad at all. I got my girlfriend a pair of those a few years ago and she loves them. But my personal choice for buds are
