My prayers are with Michael and his family.

So sad. Say what you want about him on the track, but he is a great man and has done a lot of charity work in his lifetime.

Per the latest BBC article

"Neurosurgeon Stephan Chabardes said that a post-operative scan had shown "diffuse haemorrhagic lesions" on both sides of Schumacher's brain."

As have been in the medical ICU field for many years, that statement is worrisome. Let's pray that the swelling starts to subside and makes a speedy recovery.

Doesn't look good, even if he survives it seems things might be profoundly bad for him. A shame , I really respected what the man has done over the years. Hope he can somehow pull one this out.

Awful....the worst part is, it would probably be better if he doesn't make it. Wonder if he has a will with direction regarding this situation since he has a dangerous career.

I was thinking the same thing; unless it's a full recovery, then perhaps it would be better to for him to not pull thru.

This is a guy who had the need for speed so bad that he came out of retirement, despite having little to gain and much to lose. Certainly didn't need the money, and the record books show he had nothing left to prove that way either. Yet, he still couldn't keep out of the car.

If he survives this but is left in a state where he can't do much by himself, perhaps not even drive a street car, let alone participate in any adrenaline activities like skiing or Karting or whatever, that would probably be a horrible sentence for him.

I would agree that given his career, he probably has some formal directive in the event he cannot speak for himself after some accident, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if it contains a "turn off the machines if I cannot control my own body" clause.

You know he is married with two kids right? A daughter and a son. I for one hope he pulls through and enjoys the rest of his life with his family even if he is in a wheel chair for it. Life is still worth living.

it certainly is, but if he isn't 100 percent..i mean i wouldn't want to see my father suffer slowly, especially knowing the kind of man he was...

either way, i'm still hoping to read he makes a full recovery.

+1.

ALL F1 drivers are certainly a different breed than "normal" people, especially when it comes to risk. They know every time they get in the race car they are once again putting themselves in the position of potentially depriving their children the opportunity to grow up with a father (much more than the average person does when they go to work), yet they do so anyway. That doesnt mean they love their kids less, it just proves that the fire they have burning inside them is too intense to be denied, despite the dampening effect that having kids would have on lots of other people. He didnt un-retire because he couldnt make the mortgage payment.

Not to minimize the hardship that anyone endures when they find themselves in a wheelchair, but I'd bet the degree to which Michael would feel constrained or oppressed by life in a wheelchair would probably exceed that of, say, an accountant or someone like that. Michaels "need for speed", or whatever you want to call it, burns far more intensely. Reminds me of the other quote from Top Gun, he wont be happy unless he's going mach 2 with his hair on fire.
