I personally avoid big cities (too much stress) and would gladly live in a colder state if other life aspects are good. Also, lived in a year round warm weather and it gets boring quickly. Nothing can beat a 4 seasons climate zone
As noted in post above, no state income taxes are possible due to taxes paid by tourists (hotel and sales tax) not elimination of basic services. Roads aren't bad here at all compared to other parts of the country.

For OP, FL has worked for me since mid-1980s. Moved from New England for college and never went back. Like anywhere, there are pluses and minuses of living here (winters are the best, summers not so much, including possibility of storms). I think you need to figure out your highest priorities for the move and narrow down based on those. Too many people will have opinions based on their own priorities to be very helpful.

Texas is a great place. Good climate - good food (great BBQ) - no state income tax - pretty low housing costs and cost of living - and some of the best driving roads in the USA in the Texas Hill Country

Yeah, From my researches I think Texas is good option, especially near Austin. As I wrote before me and my wife want to avoid winter, snow cause we are Polish immigrants and both of us are tired of winter season. We want to change something. Yup I agree with you about no state income tax and low housing costs. Gas prices are cheaper too comparing to NJ. Every state has better roads than NJ full of potholes lol

Austin and south in Texas is not brutal. We never had below 30 degrees this winter. Austin is the same latitude as Pensacola, Tallahassee and Jacksonville, FL and is south of New Mexico, Arizona and California.

Stay out of California!!!

I was born and raised there and it's politics are nucking futs!!!

As someone currently in NJ, you might see things a little better there but find yourself a free state (north or mid AZ for example) and you will understand freedom!!

First thing I did leaving was to head into a gun store in Yuma (Sprauge's?) and bought what I wanted to - legally - because I wanted to. Wife didn't understand and thought I was seriously crazy until she was here for about six months. Then she "stole" my Sig P232 as her daily carry and grins like the Cheshire Cat when she sees me open a gift wrapped box of 30 rd AR-15 magazines.

Now if I could get her to sit in a deer stand with me and notscare the deer cause "they're soooo cute." Soon those four legged rats will get to her roses and then it'll be game on - I hope.

Anything below 60 in the winter is "brutal" for some of us...

My recommendation is in the Central texas area. Both towns of New Braunfels and San Marcos are growing and are close enough to San Antonio/Austin that commuting to them isn't bad at all. I live north of San Antonio in Spring Branch and commute to work in New Braunfels. Takes me about 40 minutes to get to work.

Out of every state I've been to, I was living in NC for the past 4 years or so, by far my favorite place to live. You still get all 4 seasons, if you station around the Raleigh area you're two hours to the beach and less than two to the mountains. Tons to do outdoors and compared to the north spring and fall are extended. Great places to eat, real estate was very affordable on my single income, taxes weren't terrible, cost of living was reasonable.

I've decided to figure out a way to move back to NC at some point. If OP wants nice weather year round and money / job market isn't an issue then I would say SoCal, but then you deal with traffic, shitty government, liberals, cost of living, etc. A lot of variables that can dictate how/where someone moves.

i have lived in Florida, GA & TX so i will share a few thoughts.

Florida - its a long state so the northern part is very similar to GA and the southern part is very similar to Carribean. For the most part it very flat with not a lot of business/industry and lots of retired folks. This makes it tougher to find a good-paying job. The weather in the South is Awesome except for the occasional hurricane. But you have to get used to things taking longer/or just not being done very well. I personally don't think I could move back. Roads are flat and straight.

GA - Atlanta is popping and lots of jobs. If you have to drive around the city thought traffic is terrible. Airport will get you anywhere with the fewest hops. Near to the mountains with associated fun roads. It isn't as warm as you might equate from the South as there is an actual winter.

TX - its not a state really considering its the size of france or germany. As the poster above said - don't come to Austin. Traffic is terrible and there are so many hipsters moving here everyday as well as UT grads who don't want to leave, there is a tremendous load on the infrastructure and services with Zero appetite from the cities to scale up. Unless you are in tech, the jobs don't match the prices for housing and other expenses. It gets ridiculously hot in July & August. Several years ago we had 50+ days in a row in the triple digits. It does have hills, good food & BBQ and live music & hippies. A northern suburb of Dallas is probably a better idea for a yankee transplant.

Dallas area does not have good driving roads and it can get snow and bitterly cold in the winter. Kerrville area is much better. Weather is better - hill country roads are listed in the 10 Best Roads in the USA - San Antonio is close enough for major things. It is really a great area. Yes, unfortunately, Austin has become overgrown. It has come a long way from the laid back college town by the river that it was in the '60s.

But I heard the carolinas are nice. My parents are looking into it as an alternative to jersey mainly because of property tax being dirt in comparison. It's nice all year around and other than storms occasionally, I can't see down sides. I've been there a few times and the people are more than friendly. Must be the nice weather

In a short time I plan to be an airline pilot and once that happens, I plan on choosing a base down south. New Jersey is nice. Having lived in both north and south, I can say it isn't as bad as the rest of the country makes it out to be.
We thought the Carolina's were nice too, until we moved here 20 years ago. North Carolina has some great areas around the smokies or the outer banks, but stay away from S.C, at least the part not on the coast. Tremendous heat (it never dips under 90 between May and September) combined with lots of crime, racial tension and chemical dependency. Great place to get meth though if you're into that. And the southern charm thing disappears real quick.

Not to mention we have some of the worst driver's in the country too. Property taxes ARE low though, and there's a $300 cap on sales tax for cars. On the flip side, we pay property tax on said cars every year. My m3 costs us about $650 a year in property tax. Only a couple hundred less than the house! And the roads are absolute crap. Can't forget about that.
