I see that, but very unfortunate and as someone who absolutely loved and embraced iDrive 7, i can say 8 is horrendous and they should definitely stop ✋

I dont know why everyone is whining about the wheel gaps on BMWs, but not a word on hypercars which all have very big wheel gaps up front because suspension travel is still a thing. Take SF90, or non RS 911s, all have some wheel gap, and M5 isnt much different. You can slam it and rake the car down, but it will be worse off for most uses. Plus, may be the fact that car is a hybrid means it cant be lower due to distance of the battery to the ground according to BMW ideas of safety (mind, Porsche or Tesla have low EVs and dont care, but BMW all cars are riding up high).
As for wheels, you for sure can just replace them. Whats not so nice and I think many seem to agree is the interior situation as thats what you see most. The LED lights that will reflect up in the glasshouse are a questionable choice any day, but here the way they are... Overall may be this car is not perfect, has some flaws, but probably is OK for this new transitional malaise era of 20s car design (aka the new 1970s). And putting old and new M5 next to each other... That doesnt help new M5. The old one looks so good. Still, dont wanna judge this car too harshly, this isnt the XM after all.

Appreciate the write up and glad to read the pros. I try to find positivity in everything.
I don’t post much on this site but I own several BMWs, make a good living, and would normally be at the point I’d be looking to purchase a new car. My preference is always a manual but I went and looked at the M3 and simply couldn’t get past the horrid screens on the interior. So I was hoping to be blown away by the M5… …and I hate it. I just hate it. Everything about it is ugly and overblown. It’s getting so depressing. I love our X5 but my kids are growing and we could really use a three row. And the X7 is just so ugly I can’t do it. My wife hates it even more than I do. BMW wtf. You make the best engines in the world but your design team is literally the worst on the planet at this point. Ahhh. Rant over. At least the tech in the M5 looks cool. There I ended on a positive note. |

Now, -like you also mention with the grille-, is all about bling bling and unneccesary screaming ugly lines… The headlamps, tailights and that uber ugly rear fender- rear door connection is the cherish on the cake. If I will weld that area with my buddys in my garage, I will do a better job than that… And the interiors are an absolute disgusting aproach. Long, weird tablet (with a terrible, angular, childish and cheap designed software appearance too) that is not even dash integrated and leaves not only a weird behind dust-collecting space but also a lot to be desired, the lack of a nice shifter that will make you still feel that you drive a car and not sit at a desk on youtube makes it look really cheap, and …lots of shitty plastic… makes this car a let down in every aspect… Either way, for me, this is such a step down that I am not even consider such car anymore. I dont care about the power, (not to mention the weight) , I can do exceptional with the previous beautiful generation, or… another brand. I still need to turn my head with passion towards it when I lock it. This one makes me look the other way. The whole car is gaudic. Last edited by Teutonic; Yesterday at 08:21 AM.. |

The first three bullet points are clear marketing jobs. In the grand scope of things most people aren’t complaining about the 20/21 wheel size or the rear spoiler and let’s be honest wheel gaps are present on all cars not just the G90.

Idrive7 isn't perfect but it damn near would be if my Waze maps could transfer to the center gage cluster screen. Lol. Spinning the idrive controller should also default to media volume. But anyway nobody is listening and idrive 7 is dead! I am amazed that there isn't more law enforcement backlash against the middle screens being all touch. It is inarguably more distracting to get into settings menus while driving - it's probably worse than texting and eating a sandwich. |

You love the aggressive styling but then several of your complaints are about the styling? Makes sense.
Also, there is nothing aggressive about the styling compared to the previous M5. This one looks like a heavy, sagging-assed basic sedan.

"We are very impressed with the G90 M5's performance" - sharing the same impression. Is it perfect in everyone's eyes? Perhaps not. But the alternatives are far and few between.

I have a G81 with carbon seats and it feels special unlike the G90 which is rather dull, even with the carbon trim. It is rather a let down, build assembly is still good but the material quality and cabin layout is a step down : from the super cheap window buttons, unnecessary complexity for operating air vents and lack of closed storage where the phone charger was on the M3... Removal of real buttons on the steering wheel is another way to make things cheaper and compromise further user experience. I really miss the idrive 7 G80 interior which still had climate control and heated seat buttons and the driver dash display was not part of the infotainment panel, that was peak BMW interior IMHO. Now on the upside where I live the G90 is cheaper than the G8x so it kind of reflect the price in a way

There's the caddy ct-5 blackwing too but then you're paying 6 figures for a GM product funnily enough a loaded G80 start to enter the picture as well, no V8 and less interior room and so on but it does lurk in the background |

Do you actually have a car with IDrive 8.5 or do you just like hearing yourself talk?

I've had multiple loaners and experience, as well as at the performance center. I wouldn't want to own one with it but i have plenty of experience, which is incredibly annoying. Also, i do enjoy my own voice, its pretty sexy, however im not hearing it here since this is only typing.

Comment and Question
I feel as though BMW purposely didn’t add the ability to add more luxury to the cabin to keep the price point low for a the initial roll out. iDrive 8 / 8.5 / 9 offer more features and functionality then iDrive 7. I don’t like how they integrated it. Most don’t. I own both , driven a dozen or so loaners with various varieties. panoramic iDrive 10 should incorporate all the lessons learned. I hope. Is this S68 DME Crypto locked like the G8x? If so have they closed the FEMTO monopoly back door like they did with the G8x LCI?
