Picked up a Samsung LED backlit about a month ago. Use it as a computer monitor. I LOVE it. The blacks are blacker than my large LCD, the colors are brighter and more vivid. It honestly almost hurt to sit there and stare at it with it set to full brightness. I had to turn it down. But the response time is lightning quick and I have zero complaints about it. Personally, I've never been a plasma fan.

Plasma:

- Sucks up more power
- A LOT heavier and harder to mount
- Suffers from burn-in
- I always thought they do not look as good
- Fast moving stuff will look better

LED-Backlight LCD

- More features
- Brighter picture, as LED backlit TVs are very vibrant
- Really light and easy to mount
- I think it looks better than plasma
- Suffers from motion blur

Everyone is just saying buy plasma, but led but there is no real explanation to why..

LED is brighter, so if your putting it upstairs in a bright room, you will want LED.

Plasma has better color, but not as bright. You would pick this kind of TV for a basement where lighting is not an issue.

it depends on what you want? for example a plasma has a plastic screen so in the light you can still see the screen with hardly any blur. The LED has glass which we all know can blur. The led is super slim while the plasma is not. The plasma has 8,000,000:1 contrast while led has 2,000,000:1 or 4,000,000:1 contrast. Plasma has better colors and shows more detail. Led is way brighter so i guess it dumbs down the not having the best color factor. After all that I still went with the led because I thought it was perfect for what I wanted it for and it was wicked thin.

Yes, calibration by a real experience ISF tech makes a huge deal. I know it did on my 50" Kuro Elite. Not the bullshit Geed squad calibration too. And true, don't listen to what any sales persons say, especially at BB. Only place where the sales people had good knowledge and seemed truthful was Ken Cranes in Pasadena. My personal preference is for the plasmas, delivers a more natural image IMHO.

Old plasmas, yes. Newer plasmas, no.

I have an older Panny 58 700U, and still no burn in. Over 4 years old and going strong, with a lot of gaming hours on it to boot.

OP said the tv was for the basement. I would guess that the tv will be installed professionally. So basement = Plasma and installed tv = who cares about weight since thats all you wimps keep complaining about.

LED's are nice for super bright rooms or for basic tv needs. But for gaming, movie watching and sports plasma is the way to go.

Matter of fact I have the Dark Knight in my blu-ray now and the dark scene where he breaks into the hong kong highrise. With the darkness of that scene a LED will have a hard time replicating. I have a Panny 800U that is calibrated.

I was leaning towards the LED because of the ultra slim profile & extra features, but if it's going to have a hard time with dark scenes in movies & video games then I guess I will stick with Plasma.

The TV is mainly going to be used for Blu-Ray movies and sports anyway, maybe occasional PS3. My basement isn't very bright, only has 3 small windows so not much light gets in to have an effect on glaring.

Reason why I think plasma is better for all-around use:
1) Better blacks
2) More natural image (i.e. better for movies)
3) Minimal/no motion artifacts (i.e. better for sports)

As previous poster mentioned, plasma burn-in is for all intents and purposes a "myth", assuming normal usage (and not leaving your DVR/DVD/Blu-Ray on pause for 5 hours straight).

IMHO, LCD/LED are better for gaming because of the brightness and contrast. And yes, LCD/LED is lighter (for you wimps out there; BTW I have my plasma on a stand, so weight is practically irrelevant).

So unless all you do is game with your TV ...

Edit: one more thing -- in order to minimize motion blur, LED and LCD both increase their response rates (120 Hz, 240 Hz). While it does work as advertised, in order to do so, the TV basically "creates" additional frames. The result is a "3D" look on the screen, similar to what you might see if you were videotaping. Not so bad for sports (because it makes it seem like you're there), but the effect on movies is IMO terrible: first, it makes the movie different than what the director intended (extra frames), and second, the "3D" effect is somewhat disorienting and headache-inducing after 2 hours.

I prefer plasma over LED. Some people said the 120hz is too fake looking and now that they've come out with the 240hz, I don't even know how that's gonna even look like. I've been using plasmas for years and like the "sharpness when they need to be" and "blurriness when they need to be" factors. For example, plasma is excellent for watching sports.

The days of having a 100lb plasma that is 6" thick are over. I just got a Samsung 55 LED that is 1" thick and weighs less than 50lbs. The black levels are great. Anyone who argues otherwise either hasn't seen the new led tv's or would think their plasma is the best no matter what they see.
I currently don't know of any plasma that is 6" thick?? And yes manufacturers are still making plasma tvs. Why? because there's still a high demand for them.

You have no idea what your talking about...

Agreed. I had a chance to check out a buddy's Pioneer Kuro and was blown away!! Holy cow that thing was AMAZING!!

The last thing is known as the soap opera effect. It is not created by the 120/240hz, it is created by the frame interpolation that tv manufacturers use to try to smooth out the image. It can usually be turned off in the tv's menu.

High contrast ratios are, at best, meaningless and, at worst, misleading. See:
http://www.practical-home-theater-gu...ast-ratio.html

Really, anything over 1,000:1 is acceptable to your human eye.
