I imagine that the older cars are missing the proper tags for the iPhone to read, or something like that. Or, alternatively, the iPhone implementation is different to that for Android. Not sure, but probably the issue is related to something like that.

At least if all the features are "there" it could eliminate blank switches?

Btw, this is how Tesla works. Perhaps you’ve heard of them? They seem to be doing ok with it.
No, I won't accept this. You'll pay for all the hardware anyway but they don't let you use what you've paid for.

BMWGirlFL Do you have the rest of the videos? I'm under the impression that we're missing one or two more, based on some pics on BMW's website.

No and I think you're right. Maybe on YouTube but unlisted.

How expensive the "gizmo" hardware in car? For example the 360 view camera "cost of good" wise is probably very cheap, total system integration R&D is probably the bigger cost, so probably cost very little for that to be just added on every car (hardware wise), then extract value based on software enable. Though I definitely prefer a permanent enable model then subscription based...

P.s. and I'm sure there are some hardware that actually "cost", but just saying for some of the stuff I can definitely see adding the same hardware to every car makes sense for them

The whole used car process will become like the new car process - it'll be easier, more convenient, and less costly.
Or more likely BMW will move paid options on the car into the non-transferable category and buying a used car will become more expensive unless you want something closer to the base trim.

Options already don't command munch in the used market. Meaning, if you find a fully loaded 5 series and a base model 5 series they'll sell within a few thousand price wise (if any difference at all). Whereas new they were over $10K apart price wise.

BMW is likely moving to a point where they can reset a lot of the software features and when buying used you'll be re-purchasing options that were purchased when the car was first purchased/leased. This sounds good as you noted as now you can possibly get an option that was added to the car, but not enabled by the first owner (especially software ones). But since these will only be capable of being sold and activated by BMW. It will be s push up of car prices in the used market not down.

Tesla does this already. If you buy a used Tesla they "reset" paid software upgrades like the "Full Self Drive" upgrade and the used buyer has to drop another $5K or something like that to unlock what was previously already unlocked!

Short sighted

It is completely asinine. Providing heated seats or adaptive cruise is not a consumable item that requires a subscription. BMW is not providing you a service by allowing you to have built in features which have no ongoing costs to BMW.

If they are going to charge you an ongoing fee are they also going to warranty these items past the manufacturer warranty? And how long are they going to support the subscription service for my vehicle? 10yrs? what happens afterwards? Are my seats or other feature still going to work?

If it is anything like CarPlay was when it was under subscription the feature would be unavailable if the car can't "phone home" to BMW and verify you have access. That implies you may lose access during on outage, but also you'd lose access once the cell phone connection in the car no longer works (which is realistic since BMW isn't yet putting 5G in any of their cars and 4G LTE will get retired at some point).

If my2020 doesn’t support rsu, then why do I get this message?

No update is necessary.

BMW M550I XD, 2019, WBAJS7C08LCD93459

The software of your BMW will be updated automatically.

The owner's manual says:

Displaying the version of the
installed software
The software version installed in the vehicle is
displayed.
Via iDrive:
1. "My Vehicle"
2. "iDrive settings"
3. "Software update"
4. "Show current version"
If an update has been carried out before, select
the desired version to display additional information.

I don't see software update.

The BMW software update page is not updated anymore. Since the MY20 5-series dosen't support Remote Software Update due to ID7 Lite, it probably require a visit to the dealer in order to update. Time will tell!

I have trouble believing this. The airlines said the same thing when they started unbundling their services. Then they raised the price of the ticket to where it used to be and then charged more for more services.
