BMW M5 Generations Drag Race [Carwow]

Carwow put the G90 up against the F90 and F10 in a drag race.

Quote:
It’s time for a BMW M5 head-to-head!

We’ve got Mat in the all-new BMW M5, and he’s going up against the two previous generations - the F90 and F10! The all-new G90 has come under a bit of criticism for its weight, but will that prove decisive? Let’s take a closer look at the stats.

Starting with the new G90, it’s powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 coupled with an electric motor. These combine to produce an incredible 727hp and 1000Nm, and this power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic gearbox. It tips the scales at a mighty 2,435kg, and as new it costs from £111,000.

Alongside it, we have the F90 Competition. It also has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and this creates 625hp and 750Nm. Power is sent to all four wheels via an 8-speed auto, and it weighs 1,895kg. When new, it cost around £109,000.

Then finally we have the F10. It’s also packing a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8, and this produces 575hp and 680Nm. It’s the only rear wheel drive car here, with the power sent to that set of tyres by a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox. It’s the lightest car here, at 1,870kg, and when new it cost £79,000.

So will the newer and more powerful car snatch the win? There’s only one way to find out for sure… LET’S RACE!

Thanks for sharing, watched the video!

Wish they did a few more braking tests. It's easy to blame the weight, but w/o measurements, there's reaction times and other things that come into play.

Like in this video, where they compare M5 with RS6 and GT63, they did a follow-up braking test, and results were all different.

Considering the advantages, g90 did surprisingly well against a f90 comp which most likely had cold air intakes, downpipes, lowered for better launch, and Matt who’s a better driver plus he’s lighter…

yeah I don't trust that F90 owner at all, shame Matt couldn't get a dependably stock F90 for this test

you can see the engine bay of the cars which the f90 had stock intakes. We all know Intakes and DPs don’t do much of anything without a tune. And when they removed the race chip the 11.1 is very standard for what stock f90s have run on carwow over the years. Lowering the car for better launch? That’s a stretch. 11.1 is very much in line with stock times.

The take aways for me is that the cars are very close in performance, overall the f90 is slightly faster in the 1/4 and roll which was expected given the hp/weight figures and the g90 is slightly quicker off the line due to electrification.

The G90 is slower than the M5 F90 CP LCI, there is no way around that fact. That F90 other than the piggyback was bone stock, noticeable by its exhaust and sound. The G90 is as fast as the M5 F90 non CP without the LCI. I drove the G90 extensively in the autobahn, the difference is the pick up. In the real world, like Chris Harris said the G90 will be 2 car lengths ahead before the F90 starts moving. But the F90 CP LCI is faster, I felt it through my butt.

Another thing the top end power in the G90 is monumental (weight is less important than power at 150mph plus), the G90 pulls really hard to the limiter.

I totally agree with everything you said
I still think the g90 will have a better rolling then the f90 given instant torque
The car does not have intake but i think may have a downpipe or exhaust
It pops a lot abd it is liud for a european version of f90

We shouldn't conclude too quickly either. That's the result they got that day, with that particular car. The results can vary a lot from one time to another, the proof is that Mat Watson tested the F90 comp several times with very different results which varied from 11.1 sec to 12.5 sec. It will be the same with the G90. Basically they are two cars with similar performance and both are very fast. If the only important thing was the 1/4 mile we would all have bought Tesla Palids for less...
