BMW’s doors are not challenging to close in the normal manner so what’s the allure of the electromechanical closure?
My X5 had it and 99/100 times the door would shut perfectly despite low swing velocity, only very occasionally would the soft-close system be called upon.
So, the singular benefit may be for a ‘silent shut’ if one had very particular needs for same where the car is in use???
I don’t get the draw to soft close doors either. Rarely ever had an issue closing any of my car doors let alone the ones on my BMWs. I will admit though, they were a little nice to have in the X5 and ensuring the kids had their doors shut each time they got in, however, again that is such a small fraction of them ever engaging that I still don’t get the big draw to them here on the forums.

yeah count me in the confused 'murican group, can't remember the last time I failed to close a BMW door.

Now the kick-to-open and close trunk feature is useful

LOL I agree. Have them on the RS6....rarely use them. Just another thing to break.

Luxury feature. Never need to slam doors and quite the nice feeling adds up to the whole experience. That's all.

Of course, cars without it feel a bit just cheaper.

Ah, fair enough, to each, their own.
I’m just surprised how emotive soft close appears to be on the forums …folk seem to be unwilling to buy the car as a result which I feel is a bit extreme.

Lol…
…and that trunk move is like a secret handshake, difficult to master but definitely essential!

A while ago, I had soft-close doors in my F11. 3.0 diesel. Now, having an M5 without them, despite being the top-tier 5 Series, feels odd.

Not a dealbreaker, of course, but it’s in the same category as removing soft-close from the rear doors. If you need to put bags in the back, you first have to open the front door—it just doesn’t make sense

I think you mean, comfort access. And in that regard, just us the proximity lock/unlock. Works really well and you don’t have the issue of having to unlock via the front door just to get into the back.

It’s kind of funny my 750s has soft close but the m5 doesn’t. It took a bit getting used to it but I always preferred soft close doors on all my cars especially when kids go in and out

Yes, no Comfort Access on rear doors and no Soft-Close option is obvious cost-cutting and just removes some of the “premium” feeling from a very premium-priced car. Nobody needs Soft-Close doors, but nobody needs an alcantara headliner either.

If the bulk of features are common between these cars and cars costing half as much, every dash design is a big swooping mono-screen and interior materials quality is declining, that leaves controversial styling as a selling point.

Yup, I agree with several points from others. Do you need soft-close doors, comfort access, and leather everywhere instead of cheaper plastics? Not necessarily. But when even older models or lower-tier cars had these features, their absence now makes the car feel less premium.

When I test-drove the i5 M60, everything was quite nice, but compared to the previous-gen 5 Series, it lacked that premium feel—mainly due to those small missing details

The rs6 is at the end of its lifestyle and it's peak form of its platform similar to the CS.
I get the comparison but it's not apples to apples

my cousin has a 2024 RS6 Performance... i'll just go ahead and say that car gets a TON of hype for what reason I am not sure... he had a F90 m5 comp before... there is a MAJOR dynamic difference between these 2 cars...

The Rs6 is fast but doesn't feel fast at all because it'a massive boat and the "practical" aspect of it highly questionable as the rear seat space is quite small

Being avant with V8 (or wagon as you call it) - is the main reason.
