I think it would be a v8. If it had FI, rs5 would have more ponnies/tq than that.

I was only showing how such a story might have been put about and why it's almost believable. Valve-lift is meant to improve torque by up to 12% (might be marketing talk this figure) but the real facts are that the S5 makes 440Nm without it and an improvement of 12% equals 492.8Nm.

If the 470 hp / 4.2 liter motor numbers are to be believed, I would bet against natural aspiration....this is 112 hp / liter.

I am betting on light turbos somewhere between a BMW N54 and a naturally aspirated engine. Something like 5-7 psi so much of the engine's characteristics would somehow look like a naturally aspirated engine.

That sounds a lot more believable to me and if executed correctly will still have the behaviour/feeling of a N/A engine. If true this might be what we may expect if BMW chose to go the FI route for future Ms.

P.S.
On a different point, the F430 produces more per litre than that so why wouldn't it be possible for someone like BMW or Audi to do similar. I don't believe the crank has any bearing on this though I am not certain, the only thing I do know is the RS4 engine has the highest piston speed on any production engine.

You can throw in the GT3 engines in there. To wring out that type of power output would mean stressing a normally aspirated engine hard and this may be unacceptable from a warranty / reliability perspective.

The S85 V10 / S65 V8 could easily deliver more power by increasing revs and/or tuning the engine to deliver more torque at higher rpms at the expense of low end torque....in the end it is a trade off.

Light pressure turbo cars may be the ugly compromise that M may need to make but I would expect this from an ///M car
  • Better volumetric efficiency at low rpms
  • Turbos provide better breathing at high rpms to compensate for making the engine perform better at low rpms
  • Have it rev freely as it does today
  • Perhaps have KER technologies in there

Revs aren't the issue, Honda have been producing engines revving to 9000rpm with minimum warranty problems.

I agree that the likelihood is it will be FI but which form, will it be turbos or supercharger, I don't know which would allow the engine to rev highest, a guess would be the supercharger mainly because MTM have their own RS4 with a compressor still revving to the same as the normal car.

P.S.

I don't want to side track this discussion but in a way it is relevant because of the FI debate. Do you have any idea as to how much the RS6 engine is truly capable of producing, reliably?............wrong, it's meant to be close on 900hp.

I know I couldn't believe it either but it's meant to be true.

Off topic, I saw a 4.0 TFSI V8 engine in 'Audi's upcoming engine list'. Could that be a candidate for RS4/RS5 engine bay>? I dunno if it's turbo or supercharged but it does say TFSI

I actually thought when the RS6 came out that the RS5 will have a 4.0 TFSi based on the V10TT. It was just an idea but it would give great figures! At this time even the details I gave have a posibility to be wrong but I've heard from a couple of good sources. Never forget that Audi have been known to try more than 1 setup in their prototypes

I heard about this engine, it's going to feature in the A6 and A8, must likely the Q7 as well at some point. There won't be any weight saving over the 4.2 currently used but there will be a big gain in power, torque and most important economy and C02 levels.

If there was ever an engine to push BMW M-Division down the FI route then this might be it.

Just like the M3's V8 is based on M5 V10....hmmm.....I certainly hope so!

Fingers crossed....hope they do it.....TT or SC V8 would be awesome

Yesterday afternoon in the American southwest desert, our spy phtographers spotted an almost entirely undisguised Audi RS5 high-performance coupe. Aside from the absence of oval tailpipes - which would make any efforts of hiding what it is entirely null and void - this is the 2010 Audi RS5.


It still remains unclear just what motor is under the hood, but the latest rumors suggest a 4.0 liter turbocharged TFSI V8 putting out an impressive 470 horsepower. The RS5 will certainly challenge the BMW M6. Though we don’t know any specifics on an estimated debut, we would estimate that it will show up soon at an auto show and be on sale late Spring or early Summer 2009 as a 2010 model.

Those are intercoolers at either side. Well there you are, it's turboed.

Does this meant it's still using the 4.2L from the RS4 or is it a new engine, maybe the 4.0TFSI that to take up service in the A6 and A8.

Yea, those are intercoolers, it sure looks like its FI to me. Not liking the spoilers etc... that much though. I thought it would be much, much nicer. Lights are funny too. Oh well, I suppose its going to improve.
