forget trying to buy property there now... my brother bought a really nice house (pool, and everything) for 200k and his neighbors, being all russians now all paid over 1 mil for the exact same kind of house (same size, some even smaller). how can you be stupid enough to spend 5x the price of something?

You know, I typed up a really long post about this same thing and decided not to post it but it was also my understanding that when the soviet union collapsed, all of the previously state owned commodity assets were doled out to those closest to the former government which is why there are so many relatively young billionaires in Russia. None of these guys are "self-made," they started life on 3rd base and think they hit a triple.
